Hey all. Am getting a black ipa put together and I want to keep the grain minimal. 2 row, maybe crystal 40 or 60 and then something to get it nice and black with out coffee or roasty flavors.

Id been thinking of using debittered black malt or Carafa 3 special, but was also looking at sinamar.

One question I had for those that have used it. It says once opened to use immediately (or something along those lines). My question, is sinamar good for more than one use? I don't want to spend 6 on a bottle, only use a little and have to chunk the rest.

I see pros and cons to using sinamar but am still leaning towards grain in the mash. Any insight?

I have never used sinamar, but at $5 a bottle + shipping, it doesn't seem worth it. There are plenty of debittering black malts that can be used for color that add very little flavor. Carafa 3 is a very popular choice for black IPA's, also look into Midnight wheat malt, and blackprinz malt. Around 8 oz of each will get you the same + SMR bump as a 4 oz bottle of sinamar in a 5 gallon batch at a fraction of the cost.

Yeah I was a bit weary. Thanks for the recommendations.

I use it for adjusting color for beer that is being bottled for competition. I use an eye dropper and put drops directly in the bottled beer. I can't imagine why you'd have to use it all once you open it. I buy it from Williams Brewing and they must package it from larger containers and label it themselves. I have a half empty bottle that has been in the fridge for going on 4 months now and there has been no change.

I believe Jamil Z talked about sinamar during one of the brewcaster challenge episodes for black IPA. I believe he was a fan of it.

I just tapped a black IPA and have been getting some good feedback from it. I used carafa special though. After I started recirculating with the pump, I dropped in the carafa. A few minutes later I started my sparge. I was able to get great color with only the slightest hint of roast in the flavor. Simcoe/Amarillo dominate the nose

A pound of midnight wheat will get it blacker than black, with the added bonus of nice head forming protein.works like a champ.

Great idea! Didn't think about adding it late. Cheers
