So I bottles my 2.5 gal batch of ode to Arthur stout today. The one that I've been stealing extra hydro samples from cuz it's just so freaking delicious. Then I knocked over 8 full bottles on their way to my capping station. I think I've gone through all the stages of grief now and am at full acceptance. I lost probably 4 bottles worth... One rolled all the way into the living room, leaving a trail of delicious precious beer on its way.

My question is, and yes I'm already RDWHAHB, but I cleaned the bottle tops, filled them back up (they all lost about half of what was in there), and capped with clean, sani'd caps. Will there be any off flavours from this adventure? This was probably the cleanest beer I've brewed so far, go figure. I marked the bottles that had spilled, just in case. Should I also worry about bottle bombs?

Pic of part of the damage. May seem like a small spill to some, but when I only get one case per batch, it becomes a higher percentage of waste...

It's just another way to learn how to improve the ergonomics and method of your bottling, just get the next brew going and put this behind you, it's gonna be interesting what some are going to say about oxygenation, but I would have done what you did, topped them up, capped them, and drink them inside a two weeks.

So how did you get all that beer back into the bottles? :cross:

Wow. You must've been picking them up like speedy gonzalez to only lose half of each one. I wouldn't worry about oxygenation and use those for checking carb level and drink them first. I'd actually put one aside and drink it last just as an experiment. At the worst you get a good idea of what oxidized beer tastes like. At best it's the best beer of the batch

If it makes you feel better, I spilled all 5.5 gallons before. I was using a racking cane to transfer my wort to the primary fermenter. As soon as the wort started to flow, I left the room. When I came back ten minutes later, I found that the hose had slipped out of the fermenter and the racking cane had transferred my wort to the floor.

I was not very happy...

Sorry to see your mishap and mess. Since it's so good, you seem to have the right recipe and process. Brew another one really soon, and make it a double batch. 5 gallons of good beer is really not a lot, given the time it takes to brew (and clean up), and wait for it to ferment and condition.

I hope you saved the yeast, ready to pitch this weekend.

Floor-bottled stout!
