SWMBO keeps referring to fermentation as "spoiling". I've tried to explain that it's not 'rotting', its just the yeast converting sugars.... Has anyone had to make this distinction?

My SWMBO thinks that my beer has yeast poop in it. I've explained to her that yeast's byproducts are just alcohol, CO2 and more yeast... the sad thing is that she's a biologist.

Sorry to say...She is right...you are drinking yeast poop...and yeast urine as well...but we fine folks call it sediment and alcohol :mug:

It's controlled spoiling ;) and so is cheese, yogurt, wine, kimchi, etc. That doesn't make it a bad thing.

Does she eat bread? Last time I checked, there was live yeast in it right up until it was baked :D

I wouldn't so much call it "spoiling" as it is controlled "breakdown". Think yogurt, it's a controlled breakdown of lactose sugars into lactic acid. It's still microorganisms eating and pooping, but it's only the ones that won't hurt you. In the case of yogurt it's actually the same ones that occur naturally in your body and aid in digestion.

"Spoiling" implies a sense of uncontrolled, free-for-all, everyone's invited to the breakdown party, microorganisms orgy...including the little bacteria that can kill you.

My $0.02

Agree with her that it's spoiling and tell her you are so concerned with her welfare and due to her delicate constitution you won't let her have any of it to drink lest it upset her digestive system.

never had that with beer - but get it all the time with kimchi.

eww you're eating rotten cabbage - dang it son, its fermented, not rotten....and its delicious
