Hi,

Been brewing my own kombucha for a couple of months now (and today moved from a three litre to a seven litre tank to increase production.)

I've been reusing old soft drink bottles to do the secondary ferment, however I have a few wire bail jars like the one pictured below, and was wondering if I could use them instead? (My main motivation is that they are easier to clean afterwards, as well as get out the chunks of fruit that were added for flavour.)

dont see why not
Consider using a rubber band on the lock down instead of locking it down all the way on the first couple of batches if your worried about bottle bombs

they aren't made to withstand large amounts of pressure and are incredibly dangerous to consider carbonating in. I highly recommend swing-top "grolsch" style bottles. Reusable, not terrible to clean, and designed with 4 or so atmospheres of pressure in mind. Proceed to use these at your own peril.

Thanks, RBA. I do have a few of the "grolsch" bottles, although two of them don't seal properly and would leak if turned upside down, so not useful for the ferment.

Buy new seals for the swing top Grolsh bottles.

Pretty much any Brew Shop will carry them, and they are cheap.

Jars? Bad idea. Good for vacuum, not pressure. At best, the seal ring blows out, at worst, it grenades.
