Well this latest (second ever) batch of mine will be interesting to see if it makes it all the way through. Just made a smashing pumpkin ale yesterday, and had it in the primary to start last night. Got a call today at work saying that it looks like the beer overflowed. Come to find out that it's the bubbles overflowing out of the airlock. Had to over the phone help teach the girlfriend how to sanitize the blowoff tube, and then how to use it. She just got done setting it up, so hopefully that should work now. She mentioned she took off the top for a little while because she was cleaning, and just got the blowoff installed. It probably was off (rought guess for 20-30 minutes.

So two questions, what do you guys use to clean this up, is it an easy clean?

And also, what's the likelihood of this being a botched batch? I'll still let it run its course, and hopefully no infections, but what's your guys guesses on that?

I just did a big post, but then it got deleted, so here is a brief summary.

The beer is fine, I had the airlock off for a few hours and the beer turned out fine. That small amount of time with yeast healthy enough to make a mess is not going to ruin it. You can reassure yourself by seeing bubbles from the blow off tube, and not getting any weird smells. It i fine, though/ A botched batch is easy to tell, no doubt about it.

As for cleanup, for overflowed dried up wort on top of the bucket is dealt with soap, water and scrubbing. Simple as that for me. I didn't clean up a beer explosion on top of the bucket lid for three weeks, and it did fine for clean up. A little stain, but not much to worry about.

I had a very high alcohol content beer literally blow off the standard air valve (dried up wort spattered along the walls- good thing I leave it in the unused bathtub!). Who knows how long it was off for- had the wife put a blow off valve on it while I was on my way home from work. The beer seems to have turned out fine. It was just ready this last weekend... jury is still out on whether it's a success or not, I will age it for another week or so and keep trying some. But overall it turned out fine, no bad taste when I racked it to the secondary
