Hat tip to iaefebs for this tip. When a poster asked how to scale down a recipe from an 8bbl system without knowing the specifics of the original system, the answer was "You just need to know your system".
I used to create an equipment profile to match the recipe, enter the recipe, then scale to my equipment profile. Maybe I'm the only one who did that, but at any rate, this way is easy.
If you need to scale a recipe up or down in Beersmith from a recipe you've found in a magazine or online, follow these simple steps.
1) Start a new recipe in Beersmith and set the style appropriately
2) Choose your equipment profile
3) Enter the grain/hops exactly as instructed in the recipe
4) Click Adj Gravity and enter the gravity from the recipe. This will scale the grain to match your system.
5) Click Adj Bitterness and enter the IBU's from the recipe. This will scale the hops to match your system.
*** NOTES ***
* I am sure this method would work in any software that allows scaling.
* If there are other item in specific quantities that are not hops or fermentables, then this method won't work for those additions.
* I've tested scaling several recipes with this method and it works great. If there is a flaw in the methodology, please let me know and I can update the process above.
