I was going to wash my yeast and re-use it for my next brew. And as I'm transfering to my seconday it occured to me that the krausen left over in my primary should be all yeast. So just sanitized a spoon and scraped it off the side of the bucket and into my mason jar full of water. Is this a good idea or a bad idea? Am I right in assuming this is yeast up there or is this just trub?

Bad idea, this only works on top-cropping yeast and most yeasts are not. Take a taste and you'll figure out the second reason not to.

Well I didn't take a taste so you'll have to fill me in. And as I had already done it, when I went to empty that mason jar on your advise today, there was a nice layer of trub, a big layer of yeast, and then water on top. Was that middle layer really not yeast??
