I'm just going off of what my LHBS charges. To be honest, I haven't used dry yeast and haven't done a whole hearted search for the cheapest dry yeast alternative.

As for time, I spend way more time brewing than I do playing with yeast.
 
This hardly seems worth the few bucks that you are saving. I can only imagine that the money your spending on sugar is offsetting the cost of the yeast. IMO, Just save the slurry and pitch that multiple times, seems like a much better savings to me.
 
I say keep on going. If it tastes good it is good. None of these fools can refute your experience, they are just throwing out their own biases and calling it truth.
