Hi all,

I was ambling through a charity shop in Aberystwyth yesterday, when I spotted what I initially thought was a cigar tube, but on closer inspection turned out to be a sacrometer. I understand (I think) that it has the same function as a hydrometer by a different name. However, I was also wondering if anyone knew anything about the comapany that made it (Souther Vinyards) and even better, if anyone had a copy of its instruction sheet they wouldn't mind scanning and sending to me (please!) as I would love to use it and know more about it! (pic as an attachment).

Thanks guys!

You'll probably have a lot more joy searching on "saccharometer" - it's just a normal hydrometer that is marked out for %sugar rather than specific gravity, you should be able to find a conversion chart online.

So in a 15% sugar solution it should float to the bottom of the blue shading and so on.

They can't spell "vineyard" either, looks like the company closed down several years ago.

I like the jester drinking a glass of wine.

Not in modern British English, it's as obsolete and archaic as spelling "honour" without a u.

I have the same sacrometer but unfortunatly don't have the instructions .as said it measures % sugar.
And simply when winemaking must should start in green area and finish in yellow.you can then use it to sweeten your wine using yellow, red ,blue levels.
