I have an Ohmbrew Fermometer on order and want to use it with a 20 year old full size refrigerator. It will be in the garage, so I will need to heat the chamber in the winter.

The fridge was free and here's why:
1) There is a slow leak from the freezer to the refrigeration compartment. The drip is in one place. so a bowl can catch it all. The drip is rather slow, so emptying it once a month or so should suffice.
2) The former owner just ignored the drip most of the time. Eventually, it caused a bit of rust under the veggie drawers in the bottom of the unit.

I want to basically ignore both problems, other than using a bowl to catch the drip. Is this wise? The drip won't touch my vessel. And, I'd like to think that the rust just does not matter.

Am I approaching this the right way?

Thanks!

Sounds serviceable to me. You might even stop the drip with a dehumidifier in the freezer. It might also never drip since you won't be running it a fridge temps.

Interior rust is no biggie. If it bugs you hit it with some Krylon between batches.

Thread two or three months ago. Similar problem. I think the solution was to clean a drain tube meant to take condensation into the pan under refrigerator.

Thanks, that is what I need to know.

Another question, for the much longer term: Can I use the freezer to cool beer to drinking temps? More important, can I do that at the same time I am using the main compartment as a fermentation chamber? No doubt I'd need a second controller, but how many other problems am I looking at?

I may never try this, but would like to know.

Past attempts at locating the drain tube in this model have failed. It drips in an out of the way place, and if it keeps dripping, it keeps dripping.

Your freezer compartment will chill most of the way, most of the time. I'd store beer in it if I had one.
