OK, we've covered the guitarists. Notice I've broadened it out ro "rock" since apparently, some people don't agree on the difference between "rock" and "metal". Here, both are included.

Right now, I only have one name in mind: Bonham.

I'll have to come back later once I've mulled it over, though.

The drummer from Def Leppard's only got one arm. (Any Bloodhound Gang fans who recognize that as a song lyric?) I can't think of his name right now, but the drummer for the Police is pretty badass. He also played for Oysterhead with Les Claypool, who is a god on bass guitar, and Trey Anastasio who is very talented but has no soul. IMHO.

Bonham, yes. I agree, the best.

But have ever heard Danny Carey. Tool? Freaking amazing.

Yeah, he was going to be on my extended list, too. Not really apparent at first, but when you really pay attention to his playing, there's a lot going on there.

rewster: So what if I brush my teeth with a piece of cheddar cheese? :D I know the guy you're talking about, but can't think of his name. Oysterhead was an interesting album.

To keep going with the Les Claypool connection, both Herb Alexander and Brain kick ass....although I think Herb is probably the better percussionist, overall.

Stewart Copeland. awesome, and i have been a drummer for 15 yrs, so i consider myself somewhat of an authority on the topic. :D thanks sam!:drunk:

too many to be #1, Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater is one of the most talented, technical drummers ever...ever.

Neil Pert of RUSH, the mack-daddy..
John Bonham of course...
Dave Lombardo of Slayer fame...
Charlie Bennante of Anthrax...
Stewart Copeland of the Police
Tim "Herb" Alexander of Primus (now the blue Man Group)
Ian Paice of Deep Purple..incredible....
Monty of Trapt (maybe my new favorite drummer)
Vinny Appice from Dio, Black Sabbath
Lars Ulrich of Metallica (i just like him....not a great drummer)
Keith Moon of The Who...
Micky Dee of King Daimond and now Motorhead
Brad Wilk of Rage Against The Machine and now Audioslave...

uuummmm...who else....:~)

Veering off into the realm of metal, how 'bout Igor?

Holy ****, Herb Alexander plays for the Blue Man Group now? I wondered what happened to him, but I never would have guessed that.

Good call on Brad Wilk....no band these days can throw down a groove like RATM, and he was the bedrock.

yea, herbs one of like 8 or 10 drummers that rotate out in Vegas. kinda wild, but he said he loves it.

Wilk is one of the best, solid power drummers ever (along w/ Phil Rudd)...

Can't believe Sammy hasn't said Josh Homme yet. :D

Who is actually pretty good, considering everything he touches (musically) is basically gold.

It did cross my mind. :D

Actually, the two drummers from Kyuss are excellent. One was Brant Bjork. I think the other guy was named Hernandez. I think Bjork was one of the founding members of FuManchu, but I might have them confused.

some guy named Romano was the 1st Fu drummer ( i freak'n dig the FU!!!!!)

There's so much cross-pollination between those bands, I lose track. I thought Fu's "California Crossing" sucked. I've read that their album(s) since then have been better. I need to check them out again.

JHo rocks. :D

i wasn't too crazy about cali crossing. i think the newest LP just came out recently. they have put out a live cd after cali crossong, but never checked it out....

If you love drums and are not strictly a hard rock/metal guy, I strongly recommend checking out Stanton Moore from Galactic--it's more funk than rock but the kid can play.

I was also always a big Larry Mullen fan from 80's U2...

Good call on Stanton Moore. He might not be one by trade, but right now he's a "metal" guy.....he plays drums on the new Corrosion of Conformity album. I've only heard one track from it, but that guy is a friggin' monster. I need to get my ass to the music shop to get that disc.

~Edit.....see my other posts about COC in the "metal guitarist" thread. I love those guys. :D

I love Galactic. I've seen them six times, and every time was great. When they cover Led Zepplin you have to admire their ability to stay true to the form while funkin' it up all nasty.

I don't know this guy's name either, but the drummer from Sound Tribe Sector Nine is a technical genius. Until I saw them live I thought they were an electronic band. The drummer's precision is unbelievable.

For me, it's a tough call b/w Moon and Bonham. Copeland is high on the list, too.

I'm surprised Charlie Watts' name hasn't crept up here. Maybe it's the media overload/uberhype from the their recent tour and yes, they oughta retire already... and I'm not a Stones fan; I own only a Greatest Hits CD given to me. But you'll never find a more rock-solid, never misses a beat drummer. I might put Kenny Aronoff in that same category, too.

Another guy who gets unfairly overlooked, mostly because he was with Missing Persons in the 1980's, is former Zappa drummer Terry Bozzio. Still one of my favorites.:) You've gotta check him out. Runner's up: the late Jeff Porcaro, Carl Palmer, legendary session drummer Hal Blaine, and a personal favorite, Brad Carlson, aka - Bun E. Carlos.

BTW, Danny Carey is the drummer for Tool.
