I think im going to try this for my First all grain brew. Should be about 3 weeks though until im ready.

Has anybody drank any of this yet? I see people have brewed it but no comments on the taste.

Made up 5 gal of 1.070 RyeIPA today!

Totally Full MLT. After adding water for mashout.

High tech sparge system.

I'm using WL 009 Austrialian Ale yeast cake, so I'm a bit off on the theme of "7", but it's similar to an English strain. Super flocculant. This should be a good one.

No Columbus at the HBS; sold their last of them yesterday. So, I can sub in either Magnum, Simcoe, or Northern Brewer, or I should have enough Amarillo and Cascade to use those for bittering.

Recommendations?

IMHO, I'd sub Northern Brewer. Cascade or Amarillo would be my second choices.

I'm leaning towards the Magnum for bittering (for just some clean bitterness) and the Simcoe for dryhopping... hoping to hear others' thoughts, espection the Pastor-Master.

I have found that while economical, the high AA varieties can lead to a harsh bitterness. I'm tending towards more volume of a lower AA content hop for the same IBUs, these days. It seems to be that a much smoother bitterness is attained doing so.

Sounds like some dogfish products. Sometimes i dig that harsh bitterness, sometimes i don't. I agree with you here, a good kettle hop does the trick with a range from 4.4 to 9 depending on the specific hop.

Favorite kettle hops:

Bullion
Cluster
Fuggles
Northern Brewer
Perle
Tettnanger

Saaz exception for lagers having a wicked low aa

Alright, so I just bought a pound of Columbus on Northern Brewer for $7 (along with four kegs for $60 :D), so I'm going to wait until they get here to brew this. Didn't have any rice hulls, either, so I've got some of those coming too.

Rice hulls, wtf for? Even with the rye it should flow pretty well. Mine did.
Bird, you're batchsparging, no?

Glad to hear kegs are on the way!

OK mine is in the primary. OG was only 1.055, but that most likly because it was my first All-Grain and the efficeancy was a little low. Oh well.

Glad you guys got this on track, seems like it going over well.

Thanks, BP

I'm racking mine to secondary right now- and it tastes good already. I still have to dry hop next week, but it's got a great flavor now. It finished at 1.006. I had to use nottingham yeast (long story with the yeast).

1.006! Way to go. That should bring on a nice mellow.:ban:

I'm absolutely brewing this as soon as I can. It's slotted in after som bottling and a batch of low ABV pale ale. Should be 3 weeks out... Maybe Golden Week* brew #1.

*Golden Week is a week long holiday for Japanese companys. Everyone is on vacation so traveling sucks... brewing is great.

At the risk of falling flat on my face in a public way, this is going to by my first AG and is slated for tomorrow AM.

ETA: Solo and without a net.

Mine spend a week in the secondary while I was gone and then I dry hopped when I got home so it's still sitting in the carboy. This is going to be a good one! I'm dryhopping with cascade (I am stuck in a cascade rut- I love them!) and the smell is awesome.

Im brewing this Saturday. All Grain..10 gallon batch. Will order the goods tomorrow. I live 200 miles from the nearest brew shop.

This will be my first brew of the year. Too damn cold otherwise up here in northern Minnesota.

I hope to have this ready for my sisters wedding in early June.

Ill post results as I have them...thanks for the recipe.

I made a 2 liter starter last night, and I'm picking up the rest of the ingredients tonight or tomorrow. It should be a great day for brewing on Sunday! Near 70* and sunny!
