I just bottled a batch of a red double IPA. The recipe shows:

O.G.= 1.067-1.071
F.G. = 1.013-1.017
ABV= 7.1%
IBU= 73

My results:

O.G.= 1.056
F.G.= 1.016
ABV = 5.42%
IBU = 95

Trying to figure out why my ABV is low and IBU is so high. Any thoughts? Here is the recipe.

How are you getting the "result" IBU number?

As for ABV, looks like poor efficiency and attenuation, which is probably down to grain crush and mash temp.

IBU calculator on Birrapps. Not sure I entered the correct alpha acids %. I guestimated after looking up the alpha acid of each hop online:

Zythos= 11%
Chinook= 13%
Centennial= 10%
Amarillo=21%

So their project og is flawed, no way 11lb of base malts will give you 1.067. You’re og is in the better ball park at 1.056 for this grain bill and 2 oz at 60 is a big bittering charge which should be over 80 ibus itself. So you’re actually alright on numbers based on the recipe. The numbers in the recipe are incorrect. I don’t like the what they had you targeting in the first place. 60ibus for a red is plenty.

Amarillo is no way 21% aa. It’s usually like 7 or 9
