Recycle yeast

Today my LHBS told me I could retrieve the sludge from the primary and keep in mason jar to use on next batch? If this is true how much do I need for a 5 gal batch?

Yes, it's true. Do a search on washing yeast. It'll be much cleaner and will go further (can be split up into several batches).

if you dont wash the yeast, you could end up with exploding mason jars!!

True. That's why I always advocate washing. It washes all the malt from the yeast thus stabilizing (eliminates any further fermentation) it.
