I can't find any newer artists I like, all sounds like garbage, over produced crap. Recommendations? Someone gave me an Arcade Fire CD (Neon Bible), not too bad, kind of a Joy Division/Bruce Springsteen mix. Looking for some new tunes.

Not sure If this is your style of music but, this guy with out a doubt is my favorite band.Plus he only plays in Texas and throws some of the best shows I have seen. Phil pritchett if you want to check him out he has free downloads of his music on his website.

I absolutely Love HANSON!!!!! :ban:

JK!!!!!!

I always have such a hard suggesting music to people. Everybody has such different tastes. But one band that I have always loved is Social Distortion. :rockin:

I've seen countless Revho shows in Austin. Met him a few times as well at his shows. Very cool artist! Well I was working on my farm about 1982 ....

Your 10000th post and we get this?!?!;)

If you like Joy Division, check out bands like Interpol (new album is great) and the Editors.

Well you missed it. Now I'm at 10,002 :cross:

I heard an interesting band on a Conan replay last night--called Deerhoof.

The music was really catchy and very odd. I really liked it though.

You can download some sampler mp3s here. Give them a shot. I think I'm going to buy the new disc.

...pullin up some corn and a little carrot too.

haha they're coming to Corpus in September and I CAN'T wait!

Nothing like the rev at all but I like the yeah yeah yeahs.....though I could completely understand why someone wouldn't like them...

Victor Wooten is a badass as well...

If you like "Neon Bible", you may like their previous album, "Funeral", which I think is much better (though I really like both albums).

Other music that I've been listening to in the very wide "Indie" category includes The Shins' new album and Band of Horses.

There's a cool website, www.pandora.com, which might help you find new music that you like. You create a radio station for a band or musician that you like, and they play a mix of songs from the artist that you've chosen, along with similar artists. I've been turned on to some new music that way. It's pretty cool.

Lately, I mostly been listening to Strung Out's newest CD, "Blackhawks Over Los Angeles." If you like new punk rock at all, check it out; it's really good.

*waiting for someone to tell me that I don't know what "punk rock" really is . . . *

Pandora is pretty decent depending on the artist you base the "station" on...some, it just has no clue what to do with or can't find.

If you guys like harder rock, but sans vocals I would heavily suggest checking out Pelican. They're playing in DC on the 28th I think (next saturday) and I plan on going.

If you're into wanna be Led Zeppelin/prog rock (it's what I hear people relentlessly classify them as) check out Coheed and Cambria. Each Album gets better and better.

Also, a more mellow sound comes from the guys from Minus The Bear.

I've read it in the past, thanks for the reminder though, I remember it being mostly older artists.

I love the Rev too. Really like to see him live, DVD is ok but looks like fun at the show.

I pick up this mag and check out the bands, not sure how the website is run, but they do have one:

http://www.exclaim.ca/

Joel Plaskett Emergency I like very much. Ashtray Rock is new album.

Not necessarily new, but obscure: The Clean.

New Zealand band that started in the early 80's/late 70's? Catchy, addictive and usually odd. There are a bunch of offshoot bands. I got turned on to these guys and have since got about 15 albums worth of stuff through their side projects. And it's all really good.

There's a new band from Iceland that hasn't been formed yet.
  • They will be media darlings for about 2 weeks because of thier afro-brazillian hip-hop retro punk sensibilities.
  • A Rolling Stone writer has already written a draft of how he discovered them and their tortured vegan lead singer with literary affections toward Proust and Dovstyevsky.
  • The drummer will be linked to the Shining Path in Peru.
  • Everyone will say that the Strand show was the best. Everyone that says that has never been to the Strand to see any band.
  • They will suck.

In fact, it'll happen next year and that's when I'll let you know who they are.

Try Calexico, Supersuckers, Wilco, Soft boys (underwater moonlight)

For a new(ish) band that sounds like it came straight out of the 70's, try Wolfmother.

If you want to hear what happens when Avril Lavigne teams up with the Cranberries to kick Sinead O'Connor's ass, listen to a bit of Flyleaf.

And from the Indie side of things:
The Plain White T's - a recent find that I've been enjoying
Quinn Hedges - a shameless plug for my cousin
Fair Trade - Quinn's newest project (another shameless plug)

I second the Pelican suggestion. Awesome band.

And my brother might be drum teching for Minus The Bear on tour this fall...I recommend them as well.

If you want a really fun, but a complete freakout of a record, the new Gogol Bordello is absolutely great. Though its a giant blender full of punk rock, ukranian folk, even a little reggae at times. All over the place, but they tear it up and I can't say I'm hearing any other music like this right now. And their live shows are insane. Their myspace page is actually streaming the whole album right now so you can check it out for free. This might be my favorite record of the year so far. There is a song called "Alcohol" on the new one that I think everyone reading this thread owes it to themselves to check out.

I'm also really digging the new Queens of the Stone Age a lot too.

And if you're into old school heavy metal. THe real stuff.... check out The Sword and Mastodon.

Oh, and I have to mention my favorite band of all time.... GUIDED BY VOICES. They have a ton of material...from lo-fi to hi-fi, (check out their database www.gbvdb.com) so it can be a bit overwhelming to jump in. but here are a few clips and you can decide if you want to get started:

DRINKER'S PEACE

EVERYWHERE WITH HELICOPTER

I tend to rock, but here are a few gems of mine from the last 4-5 years

Mike Ness (lead singer of Social Distortion) "Cheating at Solitiare" - country rockabilly, very derivitive, very good

Rise Against - anything really - The heir apparent to Bad Religion

AFI - Decemberunderground - it blew me away. still does, in fact

Alright, since we're using this threadspace:

1. Muse. Blackholes and Supernovas is a phenomenal album, but so is everything of theirs.

2. Bloodhound Gang. Nothing new since 2005, but great tunes and a great sense of humor.

3. Rapture. I recently got turned onto them.

4. Matisyahu. You may have heard of him, maybe not. Hecidic Jewish Reggae.

5. Nine Inch Nails' Year Zero album is good - far better than their last album.

6. The New Pornographers. Very easy to like.

7. The Go! Team. Still, one of my favorite "Top to Bottom Good" albums since Flaming Lips' "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots"

8. Manu Chao. I've mentioned him a dozen times before. Never mind the fact that a lot of the songs are in Spanish, this guy ROCKS.

9. Wolfmother. I know they were mentioned, I'm seconding them. Their sound is easily described: Led Sabbath.

10. Ween. OK, they have a new album out - it's an LP - but I'll mention them. Far too few people give them credit for their genius.

Moody ambient/indie vibe:
Andrew Bird
The Sea And cake
Paul Weller

Git down, funky and drunky party music:
The Dirtbombs
The Black Keys
Vietnam
Delta 72

Aggressive/political revolt style jams:
Sleater Kinney
Damian "Junior Gong" Marley
Radio Birdman (not new, but new to most people)
The Templars

Seconded, I have three of their CD's and that one is the best, although they are all really good. The others seem less punk by comparison though.

Yes! I will have to second the Dirtbombs. I forgot about them.

Wow, perfect description.

I finally got this CD on Yuri's suggestion and about crapped my pants at the first listen. I had heard a few of the songs on Sirius before, but never really gave it much attention.

Led Zeppelin, The Who, Sabbath, Jethro Tull even, it is all in there. This is a great, fun band, ESPECIALLY if you are a 70's rock fan. I grew up on the stuff, and I love Wolfmother.
