I think a cool way to approach music recommendations is kinda like the Netflix method. You tell us two of your favorite bands and based on that info, we'll recommend a band you may not have heard of but you'll probably like.

Asking for wide open suggestions will get some weird results because it's so damned cool to listen to genres that are as far away from pop as possible.

A friend of mine sings on one of the Hold Steady tracks on that album. Great band.

If you like metal, I cannot recommend THE SWORD enough. 2nd album came out last month. Young guys from Austin, TX that do metal the old school way. Equal parts Black Sabbath and heavy thrash. www.swordofdoom.com

If you like hip-hop, check out RHYMEFEST. There is a mixtape of Rhymefest doing a fake collaboration album with Michael Jackson which is simply awesome. A must hear. Its streaming here:

My favorite new album this year so far is from John Reis (aka Speedo, ex- Rocket From The Crypt, Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu and a few other bands). New project is THE NIGHT MARCHERS. More melodic, less distortion than RFTC or Hot Snakes with elements of rockabilly, soul and vintage rock 'n' roll. Still some sleazy RNR vibes here though. Great, fun stuff. You can hear some tracks here:

Awesome! I'm a big Rocket From the Crypt and Drive Like Jehu fan, so I'll definitely check these guys out.

Hmmmm....a little bit of Springsteen, a little bit of Counting Crows....I like it. I went ahead and bought it.

Thanks!

My buddy drug me to the Hold Steady show in Portland about a year ago. They are an excellent live band. No pretense, just good rock. Great lyrics as well.

I thought their tour shirts were hilarious; a round neon bar sign which says 'Cocktails and Dreams'.

If you're from the 80s like me, you'll recall that's the logo from the bar that Tom Cruise opens at the end of the ****e movie 'Cocktail'.

I like a bit of C&C myself, not everything mind you. I agree with the Maiden/Rush analogy without the big headed overrated drummer of course. I can't listen to more than two songs per sitting though because that voice can get annoying after a while. It's a great inclusion into a larger "mix tape"...ok, playlist..whatever.

Along the same lines as The Avett Brothers (folk/punkish/bluegrass), I have to recommend Langhorne Slim. Awesome stuff....I'm a big fan of his self-titled album
