Hi everyone.

Will be doin a partial extract in a week or so, any ideas on a good relatively simple partial extract recipe? I will be getting a 5 gallon pot for this. This will be my 1st brew using grains. Any sort of light or dark ale?

Cheers

Pale Ales, IPAs, APAs, Porters, Stouts, Browns, Ambers are all very forgiving. They all have enough body or hops to cover up minor mistakes, so make great styles for beginners!

Check out the kits at Austin Homebrew, Northern Brewer, or Midwest Brew Supply. You really can't go wrong with any of these online brew shops.

Good luck!

You could brew a partial mash version of a recipe you've made with extract. This way, you could compare the two (if you have any lying around). My first partial mash was Deathbrewer's Dunkelweizen.

If you're doing single infusion mashes, they are all going to about the same in terms of simplicity. It's not that much more complicated to mash some specialty grains in with 2-Row than it is to just use 2-Row because you mash it all at the same time.

I would second Northern Brewer! I think they have a really solid lineup of kits and I think they have a flat rate $7.99 shipping on most items. I could be wrong, I live there and just go to the stores. Just check out their website and get a style that you really enjoy. And yes, I think more body or more hops are more user friendly beers in terms of masking off flavors. Just don't go too crazy and jump into the IIPA's or the Imperial Stouts right off the bat.

Grab Zainasheff's Brewing Classic Styles, everything is in there including AG recipe conversions and style tips, fermentation schedules etc. for every beer style. All recipes are award winners.

That book doesn't help out a lot with partial mash brewing. I use it more as a reference for selecting specialty grains and hops for a given style.
