Recently, I went to Beverages and More as I often do. This trip was to purchase IPAs and DIPAs specifically. I can never get out of that place for under $50 and more often than not, it's more like $100. I'm researching the different properties of DIPAs to come up with my own recipe.
I have finished most of the beer bought on that trip and last night I opened Reaper Ale's Sleighor Double IPA. I poured a glass and it was reasonably dark with a small head. I smelled it and it smelled slightly of hops in a citrusy way. I let it sit for a few minutes before taking a sip. When I did take a sip, I about spit it onto my living room floor. WHOA, didn't expect THAT!! I let my taste buds calm down a bit and repeated the process. In all, I took about 3 sips and 1 bigger drink. I just wanted to be sure that my mind or taste buds weren't playing tricks on me.
I have NEVER dumped a commercial/microbrew down the drain, but this one had to go. It was a slightly hoppy penny. As if they had fermented it with a couple of rolls of pennies. I've never tasted this in a beer, but after some research it seems this can be caused by a few different things. Hydrolysis of lipids in poorly stored malts or unprotected metals dissolving into the wort to name a few.
I was highly disapointed that something like this could make it to market. Even so, I felt bad dumping it down the drain. The really screwed up thing about this situation is that I bought this particular bottle because the brewery is located in my hometown. I just kept asking myself..."Where's the quality control?"
