Ready to buy a grain mill..need help

Hi,

I am ready to buy a grain mill and need advice on what sucks and what doesn't. I prefer to buy just the roller/assembly and build my own platform and frame that the mill bolts onto. Any suggestions would be great.

I second that, I bought a Monster Mill well over a year ago and it's milled hundreds of pounds of grain without a hiccup. A bunch of guys from my club have since gotten them and so has the LHBS after using mine. If you plan to motorize it get the 1/2" drive shaft.

I've had a JSP Malt Mill for several years now and it has worked flawlessly. It gives a beautiful crush. I got the model that is double adjustable. It is easy to dial in and lock in a nice crush.

I bought a Barley crusher and wish I had gone ahead and got a 3 roller monster mill.

Is the 3 roller monster mill that much better than the 2 roller?

The MM and C&S are of very very similar design. The 3 roller is basically made so that the first roller separates the husk and the second pass actually crushes the grain. Finer crush w/o shredding the husk. I use the C&S 3 roller.

Don't know because I've only used the Monster Mill MM-3. Doesn't shred the husks and the gap stays where you put it. It is a HD mill and Fred gives great customer service. I bought the stainless version so I didn't have to worry about the rust. May have been a good idea once I start conditioning the malt

+a bunch; the MM-3 with the 1/2 inch shaft and stainless. I have a 3/4 hp motor and a 12 inch sheave (to slow it down and increase torque) and can grind 12 lbs of grain in about a minute. This is one part of my brewery that will never need upgrading. It's also fully adjustable.

What about manual grain mills?

On most mills, I know on my C&S, you can get a manual crank that attaches to the output shaft. I use a drill but I have the crank if I feel so inclined.

I got a used Schmidling Malt Mill from my LHBS. I presume it ground a billion or so lbs. of grain there. It works perfectly for me. So, I would say that those are built to last.
