Interesting article on beer trends.

FWIW, I don't agree with most of it, especially the bit concerning brand loyalty in craft beer, as craft beer loyalty is based on the quality of the individual brewery's products, not brand identity, as is the case with so many macros and old school regionals that make very similar products.

I agree that it's not at the same level as with macro lagers, but you are kidding yourself if you don't think there's a big brand identity (call it "fanboyism" if you want) element to craft beer these days.

Fanboyism? Sure. But most people who make those Big Craft brands profitable don't care about Sierra Nevada Beer Camp beers and the like. They care about the beers in their year round and seasonal portfolios.

Does anyone care about Wooden Hell any more? Has Flossmoor made anything of note in the past 5 years? I wouldn't be surprised if that was actually pretty low-key, but who knows?

If it's not insane I'll probably try to get one, I've always been curious about that beer and never tried it.
I would take that bet despite Flossmoor's lack of anything special in 5+ years.

Sorry, bad quoting by me. Yes, I would bet it is crazy as ****. It's a pre-DLD party, after all.

It will be, and it's totally dontdrinkbeer's fault. His Barleywine is Life FB group has all sorts of people amped up about the style (and this release) who wouldn't give a **** otherwise.

Since I work in the area, I'm considering driving by at 6 am and dropping some camping chairs off at the door just to see what happens.

I am confused about the comment of Bridgeport pushing out "wave after wave" of random beers. I can only think of a single new beer that I've seen from them in the past 4 months. They recently re-branded, so maybe the author is confused?

Since we don't get their stuff here in Pittsburgh, they're off my radar. Used to like their lineup when I lived in Denver, however, but that was before they were sold.

hmm, did some garage cleaning this past weekend. we have some spare, mouse eaten, camping chairs.

debating taking 2 or 3 of them and setting them up outside Badger State or Stillmank this weekend just to see if anyone follows suit.

eta: neither is releasing any new beer that i'm aware of.

This reminds me of something I've seen at beer festivals: the line that forms for no reason.

At Huna Day, 3 Sons had ran out of beer, but my buddy and a couple of other guys started some small talk at their table with the brewer. Within seconds a ~20 person line formed behind them consisting of people assuming that more beer had been tapped, and each time someone got in the line 2-3 other people in the area noticed and immediately headed for it as well. Me and another guy were standing off to the side, amusingly watching it happen in real time.

The Barleywine is Life meme from anyone other than DDB is getting out of hand. If you're not DDB and trying to pull it off, you're probably not as funny as you think you are.

What's funny is people in BIL getting all militant and defensive over anything that implies barleywine is "just nice".
