Yea we have one of those, actually two now, in NC. Funny thing is, they're just taking their beer to ****** markets and killing it. Not a bad model, but why build the huge facility?

Which are you thinking of? Because I feel like this describes more than a few NC breweries, although maybe not the "killing it" part (I wouldn't know that without seeing the books). But let me just say that (with some exceptions) the ones who have expanded most quickly and aggressively down into SC are not the ones I think of as being the better NC breweries...

I think this is my favorite one to date. Such a great pay off.

All of this talk reminded me of something else my wife did at TH that was hilarious.

As we were checking out the guy at the register was chatting us up, found out we were from out of town, asked us how it was, blah blah blah. My wife says "Ya, I just can't believe the hype around here about this place!". She meant it in a good way but the guy looked like he had been straight slapped in the face.

With a perfectly blank face he stares back and just says "It is NOT hype."

Can't believe I held a straight face, almost died laughing...
this the same guy?

So I'm trying to think of references we make around here about breweries/beers for comedic purposes.
So far I've got:

Wakefield can't keep promises.
Trinity/ Green Bench can't take criticism.
See the Stars/KBBS/ManBearPig all created ridiculous trades.
Upland will destroy your mouth with acidity.
Bruery sells infections as unexpected sours.
Bruery puts anything you can think of in their beer.
BeerzRGewd regulated trading of ABMZ
Stone does a lot of collabs?
Bourbon County infections.
Treehouse parking lot fights

Anything else?

Cycle attracts the world's worst traders.

It's a bad model long term - Australia is a market where a lot of these sorts of breweries look to (and our breweries sometimes look to South East Asia). The best example is Stone. They had crazy hype 2 years ago, but aren't really moving beers here now. They went from "all bottles of air freighted enjoy by accounted for before they land" to "stale old enjoy by still on the shelves".

Bottle shop owners sitting their wondering why they can't sell any.

New markets love shiny things but from what I can see, unless your name ends in Grossman, you'll struggle to sustain sales.

Recommend some good NC breweries? My mom's side of the family is in Cary/Raleigh and I make it out there roughly once a year to see them. I've like the few beers I've had from Foothills, Green Man, Wicked Weed.

I spent a couple days in Oakland on business, so on Wednesday night I finally paid a visit to Beer Revolution, their most well-known beer bar. Had some great things on tap, but the one thing that struck me is that Wednesday afternoons are apparently when they get shipments of Pliny bottles - and everyone ******* ate that **** up.

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy Pliny too - but there were literally guys in a frenzy about it, texting their friends and letting them know they still had it in stock. A dude even looked like he ran all the way over so he could buy 2 bottles to go. It was fairly dead because of sportsball, so at one point half the people in there were drinking Pliny.

I honestly had no idea Pliny carried that much weight anywhere anymore - especially in the Bay Area.

Doesn't the guide to San Diego on this site talk about how impossible it is to get Pliny bottles? That beer has its unreal supporters, and it also has tourists who have heard of hype forever.

Doesn't the brewery itself sell out of bottles daily now?

Also I was in SF/Sonoma in spring of 2014 and getting bottles to go was a secret handshake at every store and bar I went to. Brewery still had plenty at that point though.

But anyways, I won't hesitate to say that it's a special beer when fresh. Not stylistically, but in execution.

Best place to get it to-go consistently is Toronado. K&L will also put it up on Tuesdays quite often.
