Am I the only person on this entire website that thinks Untappd is completely useless? I have an account, but I've only used it once or twice.
I used it to promote my old beer blog back in the day, it actually increased my traffic quite a bit.
Then I used it to post troll reviews, complaining about a lack of hop presence in Fou Foune, etc...
Eventually I got bored of it though, haven't checked a beer in untappd in a long time and I doubt I ever will again. The novelty has worn off.

If I want to post a pic of what I'm drinking, I'll just use the handy dandy DDT on this website. If only there was a section dedicated to writing full beer reviews on this site we'd have everything we'd ever need.

I like it as a way to track what I've had and the social aspect is somewhat fun (more than a few times an exchange on Untappd with friends here and elsewhere has resulted in some spontaneous boxes getting sent back and forth), but I refuse to take it at all seriously, both from a personal perspective and as a source of data. The average rating is over 4 on a 5 point scale, which is just ridiculous. I'll start reviewing beers somewhat seriously and giving some thought to my ratings if they ever get running on this site.

There's enough traffic on this site that I never get bored enough to think about wandering over to Untappd. I don't really "tick", so I don't have a use for tracking beers. And yes, the "ratings" application is terrible, IMO.

After being a member for years I recently started using it again to quick review beers for personal organization. I don't use it as a social anything and only have about 4-5 'friends' on it who are almost exclusively folks I have personally known for a long time. I don't give a **** who sees what I put up there, I review to my taste, and other people's opinions are irrelevant to that. Its just a quick way to keep track of ticks.

Yeah, it's more a tracking tool than anything. It's mildly embarrassing to admit, but sometimes I actually forget what my favorites/go-tos are (begin rabbit trail about how something can be a favorite if you can't remember it...). Untappd is an easy way to scroll back and see what I've dug, especially by style ("I'm in the mood for a hefeweizen...which ones have I really liked again?")

As with any ranking website, I find that a good rule of thumb is to remove about 0.5 for hyped beers. Then it's actually pretty on the mark (for my taste anyway). If I'm trying to figure out what to try next, 3.8-4.1 is almost always a good bet if I'm not familiar with the beer or brewery. Also, it has waaaaay more stuff in it than BA, especially in regards to European beers.

Obviously, it's not meant as a professional/definitive/objective review source. I'm surprised breweries even care enough to comment on check-ins.

It's a nice way to keep track of what you've had, but it's definitely not super important to me like it used to be a few years ago.

These days I mainly only use it to see/confirm which venues have certain beers on tap. There's so much **** flung through the grapevine here regarding taplists; with Untappd it's easy to corroborate those claims.

Honestly, the best use for it is finding where a specific beer might be on tap. Pull up a beer, see if any bars in the area have it on tap, stop there on my drive home for work.

It's also a good reference if traders want to send you new locals you might not have tried before... That being said, I've gotten really lazy about checking into beers recently.

Yeah it's great for keeping track of vintages and hosting pics of what you've had. I also have a lot of friends on there so it's fun to see what they're drinking and what they think of stuff.

I hate when I'm at a share and everyone is so ******* concerned about taking a picture of the bottle, posting it to Untappd, here, facebook, wherever the **** else... Instead of just having a good time and drinking good beer with friends.

I am guilty of the above. Although once I get drunk, which doesn't take much, I normally stop checking in and taking pictures of whatever we're drinking.

I'm guilty of the same too, but not nearly as bad.

Beer is so much more enjoyable when you focus on the people you're drinking with, and not the beer itself.

I've started checking in beers after the fact, or if there are a couple of peeps checking in, find a random location and check in to that so we are at least interacting around the comedy of checking in .rar beers to "Beccy's Desk".

If I'm out with a friend/gf or whatever I'll either not do it, or if I'm left sitting by myself do it qui... omg who even gives a **** why am I typing this.

LOL @ thinking breweries have any business sense. IT'S ABOUT COMMUNITY, NOT MAKING MONEY, MAN.

This... this so much. But right now, no one needs to, because they are all making money (whether they like to admit it or not). The amount of people I've approached to advertise or sponsor our show/site for stupidly low cost who have said "oh yeah it's not really in our budget. Would if we could bro because we really want to support the industry and the work you do but times are tough, margins are small... ....

Hey did you see our fancy new bar/brewery/project?"

Brewer psychology is one of my favorite peculiarities of craft beer. If I ever met a brewer that was like "Yep some of my beer is pretty average. Some is even below-par. And this one time, I made something nearly undrinkable and sold it anyway!" I would fall out of my seat.

Man I used to check in every beer. Then once at a tasting I looked up and everybody was on their phone typing some description as if the world (there are literally dozens of untapped users) needs more reviews and pictures of ******* Hopslam.

I haven't used it since and it's not even on my phone anymore.

Now I just enjoy drinking beer and if I happen to take a picture I'll post it on DDT and rake in the likes.

I'm pretty sure in my case the guy is actually the brewery salesguy. Even worse???

Edit: 100% certain he is the sales guy.

Barrel Aged Beer
Barrel Aged Beers represent the height of a brew masters talent and passion. The impartation of long-term wood aging on fine beer makes for the most complex expression possible in terms of the aroma, taste, mouth feel and finish of these special beers. Barrel Aged Beers are truly a connoisseur’s choice.

The Spiegelau Barrel Aged Glass is the result of a two year development project in partnership...

Two ******* years to come up with that? I have one of those collecting dust in a box somewhere.
