Went to one of our regular pubs last night. They had an unlabeled tap, so we asked what it was. Between two bar staff they could only tell us it was maybe an IIPA and was really expensive. They kept emphasising how expensive it was.

So we sent in my gf to ask, and she came back and they had told her the same thing.

Determined, my friend went back in and was told the same thing and finally learned it was Stone Arrogant Bastard. Again, they kept telling him how expensive it was.

Then I went in and overheard a lady at the bar asking for some assistance. The guy was like "oh yeah just get this IPA... or maybe this pale ale" then looked at another tap and went "you definitely don't want that so ignore that". That was a gose from a local brewery which was freaking delicious and interesting and exactly the kind of beer that someone who may not know about beer might like to try.

Hey barstaff, stop actively trying to not sell people beer. That's really ****** up.

Edit: Also they gave my gf a saison at half price because they thought it was overcarbonated and had too much head. That was an unintentionally good result for her. She was all "lol those dudes are noobs"

I really do wonder how much Bourbon County this year is actually being drank within the next few months.

For that matter, do you guys still enjoy BCBS? Last year's was a little hot for me, but still great, but this year's is pretty intense on the sweetness and umami. Forget soy sauce - as it warmed I got more and more teriyaki out of it than anything.

Maybe it's because I scored the basic bitch 13.8% non-Pappy aged version.
I'm with you. It's a drain pour for me. I think some people are more sensitive to the unami/soy than others, in parallel with Summit/onion.

Sad.

Hate Summit hops. Can't stomach anything where they are a featured hop. That being said, I haven't picked up on any overly savory notes in the 14.3% batch. Of course I haven't had any on a fresh palate. Will try again soon, I am sure. Will not go through all my bottles all that fast, as BA Plead comes out right on the heels of BCBS, but we will be drinking plenty of both here.

I'm in the minor opinion on this and I know it. My wife didn't pick up on it, and I've tasted it in other BA beers as well. Would love for this not to be the case as distribution in TX sucks and i could have bought a case yesterday. For what it's worth i tasted the same thing in a home brewed rye barrel I did and I had a lot of time and $$$ invested in it for 8t to turn out to be crap. Suxs.

I'm ready to take them off your hands when you are.

Drinking 14.3% now, smells of brownies and sticky toffee. Tastes follows suit with big sweetness and thick oily palate. Zero umami. Has to be one of my favorite batches to date.

Agreed. This years is great out of the gate.

Wish I could have gotten a few more, but the craft beer scene has officially arrived in Montana. Last year multiple places had '14 for months. This year I was out of town for the holidays, and everyplace I checked today sold out on Black Friday. One place held a few for me, so I luckily still got some. I hope people don't start waiting in line for beer releases in Montana. The temp was around 0F last Friday.

Srs, I will stab people.

Have you had HF convivial Suarez? If not I'm sending you some.

If yes and you still don't like I have nothing left to say. Gobshite.

only had this years 14.3 BCBS but did not care for it. less boozy/hot fresh than most years BCBS is but this one was thin and kind of overly oakey. would not bang again.
and the coffee bottle this year... ugh, gross vegetal flavourz.

Is it not unreasonable to think, though, that barrel-aged beer might vary year to year? I get the complains when it's about Hopslam or whatever -- no aging, fermented in (thoeretically sterile) stainless steel, etc. -- those beers should be, fundamentally, the same. But, at least to my mind, it's not strange to think one year of BCBS, for example, might be better, or the very least different, than another. I mean, we seem to accept that reality for lambic, no? Why are barrel aged stouts/barleywines/etc. any different?

Where are you finding it in the Bay Area? I've been on the lookout for the past month and haven't seen it around, sadly.

OL in Walnut Creek still has it, also Alameda Craft seemed to have restocked after i bought them out once.

They are my only secrets.
Thanks! I've been meaning to visit Craft for a while, seems as good a reason as any.

Getting 3oz growlers of Hawaiian Speedway for a couple bucks less than brewery-only bombers...yup, good night.
3oz growlers, what is the name of those? Meowlers? Someone help me out with this? I know some people here have issues with refillable bottle size names. Can't remember who that was.
