dontdrinkbeer this is your alt account right? nice review for pliny the younger

Ooo baby. Watch this guy strut. Pliny the Younger's man-parts walk into a room and commands the attention of all the occupants a good five minutes before the man himself arrives. It snaps and yells and gets everyone to stand up in salute, looking astute and respectful as the man himself is about to enter. And the man? He himself is just a bunch of man-parts stitched together with the precision of the best cosmetic surgeon ramped up on the stress and the pressure of knowing his (or her) creation is set to be on every adult website one day. Looked at in high-definition 4k, 8k, retina display, 180-degree SBS VR technology. Gawked, ogled, eyes-gaped by thousands in the privacy of their home doing to themselves things in ways only they know they enjoy. The work has got to be perfect and indeed it is. Pliny the Younger takes no prisioners, makes no promises, and yet is promoted again and again to high legendary status. Some scoff at the hype, deeming themselves too cool for truth, banishing themselves to lesser beers deluded into thinking they still have their pride. Pliny the Younger strips these hip-types to the nude and laughs at their single excuse for a man-part. You can't even please men with those parts, he says. Your women must thirst for more every night, he goes on, waking you up at all hours in disbelief that it's over. They want more says Pliny the Younger. And when they get their heads on straight your women, he says, come to drink from one of my many abundant man-parts all stitched to me like a Picasso meets Rembrandt. And he laughs and laughs, bellowed out from deep inside, hearty and foul putting Santa on the naughty list and driving Satan to the hills of heaven. That's Pliny the Younger. And it's number 1.

I'd like to tick Pliny The Younger some day as it's one of the only "legacy ticks" left for me,
I think it usually corresponds roughly with San Francisco Beer Week (I could be wrong?). Plan a trip to Northern California around Younger Day at Russian River. Should be pretty easy, all things considered.

It's released like the Thursday before the super bowl, and then it goes on places through/past beer week. I've always heard that the best time to go is during the super bowl because everyone's at parties, but that may be getting less true now than it used to be.

At any rate, if you want to try it it's dead simple to find a place during beer week, there's usually random out-of-the-way places that have it on with little fanfare, and I think Toronado taps like a keg a day or something. It's not worth coming out here specifically for, but if you want to visit SF in winter you may as well come during beer week.

Oh this thread is on the topic of Pliny

Other Half is really hit or miss.

Is it quality wise or just recipe wise? I haven't had many but the ones I tried were good, nothing special. The Baltic Porter was amazing but I think that one was brewed at Creature Comforts.

Yeah, I haven't had any bad beers from them, but I've had very few truly great ones (every beer with Diamonds in the name has been awesome, but few other home runs).

Using my super scientific rating sytem, out of the 7 or so Other Half IPA's I had over the weekend: 2 were really good, 2 more were alright, the rest were pretty forgettable.

For as much as hazy IPA fans espouse fruity flavors and aromas while hating on west coast IPAs, a few of the OH's were really resinous and bitter.

This and absolutely this. The handful of cans I have had were all spicy dry hops, no finesse. I think the fact that NYC didn't have any other canned Haze for a long time made it easy for an early-mover to get recognition.
I'll drink Grimm Lambo Door all day though.

We stopped in on Friday afternoon just before opening, and I guess I just didn't fully anticipate how small the place would be in general. Saw they were working on an expansion which is great, but not sure I'd be back there with the current tap room setup.

Third Anniversary and Simcoe Galaxy (Third Anniversary was really good despite looking like broth and the Simcoe Galaxy was solidly in the mediocre range)

Tap list is a bit hard to make out, but was impressed with how many beers they had on draft. Although certainly had IPA burnout by the time we left (although the RIS was pretty tasty).

Couldn't tell if they were going for a bullet hole look with this wall.

Brewhouse looked pretty cramped, and I was surprised that they were moving the canning system out of the brewery while we were waiting outside for them to open. Appears that they are (temporarily?) storing it out in a rental truck outside of the brewery which I found interesting.

I'm glad we stopped to check the place out, and was pleased to see a different beer on at almost all the bars we hit in the city. Couple of hits, couple of duds, and the rest of the IPA / DIPA lineup was in the middle of the road territory for me.

Why? The walls are full of truth and bulletholes.

I also think San Diego gets more kegs of it than anywhere else aside from the Bay Area, so it's fairly easy to get around here. Toronado is actually the first place here to tap it, I believe, and there's a ton of others to shortly follow, so it's not hard at all to get at least multiple pours of it.

A couple of the bars around here are charging $40 for 400mL of Elder and Younger each, and 100% of the proceeds go to the ACLU. That's fairly steep, but it all goes to a good cause.

That made me feel icky.

Best way to enjoy PtY? Go to the Oregon coast in mid to late February. Drink at de Garde, then head down to Twist Wine in Pacific City and enjoy yer PtY with Vinnie's sister.

And Sammy the dog.

I'm very bummed that the coffee shop next door closed and I can't enjoy a delicious ******* crab hoagie with my Pliny anymore. :(

Bring on the ********!

Looking for the perfect beer to impress at your next tasting? Bring the experience of drinking straight from the oak barrel.
The featured beer? Something brand new from Oregon's World-Class House of Sour.

We're taking reservations today for the first bottles ever released.
Guaranteed none of your tasting partners will have ever seen this bottle before. In fact, we haven't even seen them ourselves. But they should be arriving in the next few days.

Sang du Chene is an intensely aged sour. Featuring a series of strong blond and triple ales put inside three different large format oak vessels -- foudres, puncheons and hogsheads -- giving a strong wood presence to every layer of this premier sour.

Only a select few have tried it, but the whispers we're hearing are that it's something very special.

Cut-off for bottle reservations is tonight.

Cheers,
Matthew

As long as we're waxing poetic on "old" beers, Pliny the Younger is still a fan-*******-tastic beer. In this day and age of haze, barrel-aging, and cookies as adjuncts, it's nothing "special," but it's nonetheless just an incredibly well-made beer with no immediate flaws or issues. I wouldn't hesitate to call it a perfect beer.

Even the line this year wasn't an issue. Toronado tapped it at something like 10:30am, and I managed to get there at 12:30pm on my lunch break for a couple pours with no issue whatsoever. I wonder how much #newmoney skipped it saying "no haze, no care."
Yes. I've finally figured out why I don't get the big deal with Younger: whenever I ask anybody how it is, their immediate answer is, "oh man, it's so smooth and drinkable." By contrast, if I ask somebody how any other acclaimed IPA (e.g. Nelson, Heady, etc etc) is, they'll likely respond with actual useful adjectives like "juicy," "citrusy," "clean," etc. And for the most part, it's true; the only thing Younger really has going for it is drinkability because in terms of flavor profile, there isn't much there at all.

Younger is like that cute-but-not-hot girl your one female friend keeps on trying to hook you up with, but the only thing they can say about her is, "she's suuuuper nice and sweet."

That anti hype hype.

Ha. To be fair, the points are the same, but the sentiment is a bit more reasonable. I guess old age softens my sensibilities and rash thoughts.

Also doesn't hurt that this year's Younger is a lot more aromatic and hop-forward than last year's batch.
Those are adjectives
