It does need to be primed. What they said, unless I misunderstood, was that at 4.1 volumes it was way overcarbed. His opinion was 3 volumes or a little more.
 
It shows 3.6 volumes of carbonation for a Bavarian Hefe Weizen. With 6 gals at ~ room temp (74*) you'd need:

9.1 oz of corn sugar
8.3 oz of table sugar
 
6 oz would give 6 gals about 2.6 volumes, which seems low for the style, but a bit more than a pale ale (2.4 vol).
