Well, the other day I bought another carboy and forgot to pick up a stick-on thermometer for it. Until that comes in, here's my quick and free temperature monitoring device, I thought others might like to see.

it's a sheet of air packing material that I believe Northern Brewer uses , folded in half with two wraps of duct tape holding it to the carboy (no condensation sticking issues)

The air packing material has channels so the thermometer slips in and out easily for reading and the doubled over air packing material seems to be insulating well (currently reading carboy temp @~6 below ambient in my swamp cooler)

Anyway, nothing fancy but I thought others might benefit from the two minute free solution

I'm in the same boat. I've got a small digital thermometer, so I cut a small hole in the t-shirt I've got clamped tightly to my carboy, then hold the probe against the glass to take a reading. Ambient temp is around 71, carboy temp is 65.7. This is my third batch, and I'm trying to bear down on eliminating variables. This is working perfectly for me.
