Question on yeasts for cider??

I've read through some of the above stickies. I am trying to avoid mailordering anything in for my cider. I want improvise with what I may already have or can buy locally. One item is yeast. Per chance would my local grocery store have yeasts that could be used for cider?

Any help in this would be appreciated. This is my first time homebrewing, BTW.

Order a few packs of wine yeast and some Nottingham from Rebel Brewer. Shipping should only be a couple of bucks. Probably be cheaper with shipping for a few packs than you could find locally.

I have made good cider with 71b and Nottingham. I guess you could buy bread yeast or whatever else is available to you locally, but the results may not be prime.

Do you have any homebrew laying around? You could make a starter from the sediment and then pitch that into the cider. Unless you are looking for a cider over 10% alcohol, it will work. If your cider batch is only a gallon or so, you could just pitch the dregs in the bottle without the starter. Or drink two, and pitch two.

of all my ciders i have made (3) the best by far and i mean by far was fermented from wyeast 1056 slurry and carbed using apple juice concentrate. this stuff is so good i could sit and try and drink all 3 gallons in a sitting, i say try because i dont think i could get through a dozen before i passed out as this stuff is deceivingly strong! for me 1056 in this is as good as it gets but this could be because i use this yeast almost exclusively in my brews and am just "used to it."

oh additionally my first two used nottingham and a champagne yeast and hands down my best results were with 1056
