is there a way to remove the base of a gamma lid, so i can check on the o-ring?

Ugh - I remember pounding my gamma outers with a hard plastic mallet to get the bastids to seat on the buckets.
I suspect they'd get damaged in removal, but if you're bound and determined...this guy claims his procedure doesn't damage the outer ring...

Cheers!

just tried it, didn't have any luck....with the yeast i use, and the fact this bucket has to be even leakier now...i'm getting so close to brewing traditionally, and just leaving the lid off next to an open window......

Maybe do some empirical testing instead?
Like...fill any suspect bucket(s) halfway, lid tight, and stand up-side-down in the bath tub overnight, and see if it/they leak?

Cheers!

[edit] Also, I'm not surprised if you couldn't get the ring off easily. Mine sure were a bitch to put on!

i know they leak because in the words of mick jagger "i can't get no bubbles!"

If you're going to pry it off, soak the rim in really hot water for a while first to loosen things up and make the plastic a bit more flexible.

why don't they make the kind of lids they do for steel pails? the ones with a clamped on lid, but for 5 gallon buckets?

I've removed mine...lots of constant upward pressure on the edge and t will come off

not fun but they will separate.

I just grabbed one edge with my fingers and pulled up hard and it finally gave way
