Fermenter size.

So I bought two, 2 gallon plastic fermenters today, and I'm curious as to how much actual beer these can ferment without blowing the lid off. I was going to do 1.5 gallons. Is a 0.5 gallon head space enough?

And on temperature. I have a laser thermometer that tells the me the surface temp of the fermenting bucket is 62-66 degrees Farenheit. Now I know fermentation is exothermic, so should I be leaving my fermenters in the basement, where the ambient temperature is about 55-58 to compensate for the increased internal temp?

Oh and first post, howdy all.:)

I've done 1.25 gal in A 2 gal bucket. I didn't have any problems. Not sure about 1.5 gal though. 62-66F should be fine as a fermentation temp. If the fermentation temp gets close to 70F then you might want to put them in the basement until the initial fermentation is over..
