Ok guys, new to the forum but have been reading a lot to fill my brain with all of the good info on this board. I have just got into brewing and working on my third batch right now. I recently brewed a pumpkin porter extract and have some questions. I was taking a hydometer reading after the first week to how fermentation was going, as i put my airlock back in the grommett it decided to fall into the primary. I was not ok with it since i didn't have a airtight connection so i decided to transfer to a secondary. When i took the sg reading it was dead on at 1.059 at 4 1/2 gallons. I took the second reading and it is at 1.024 when it should be between 1.014 and 1.018. Should i wait it out and see if it drops over the next few weeks? Curious about adding another 1/2 gallon of water when i transfer to keg if the fg doesn't drop over the next few weeks?

Thanks guys for helping all of us N00bs out :mug:

The next time your grommet falls into your beer, just leave it. Beers were fermented in open containers for years before someone thought of an airlock. While your beer is fermenting there is too much CO2 coming out for anything harmful to get in and once fermented there is alcohol and hops as preservatives so there is little chance of infection.

Since you have already transferred your beer, any admonition I might give about not transferring is sort of moot. However, this might still be the time to suggest that you ignore the beer for at least another week if not two. It may not get any lower FG but it won't hurt your beer to let it have the chance. Unless you really like watered down beer don't add any water. Since you didn't post the recipe or even tell if it was an extract kit or all grain, I'll just guess that the FG that you have measured is close to what you will end up with but you shouldn't do anything else for at least a week.

Sorry about that RM, it was an extract kit from Brewers Best. Here are the ingredients:
6.6 lb of Porter LME
8 oz. Maltodextrin
4 0z Caramel
8 oz of Carabrown
8 oz of Dark Chocolate
1 Spice pack
Willamete and Fuggle hops
Safale S-04 yeast

Ok i will wait another week or two. I noticed that the hydrometer was steady for a couple of days is why i decided to transfer as well. Thanks for the input:mug:
