Proper Gravity Technique

Hey guys,

I never know exactly how to take the gravity of my beer. Do I push it all the way into the "beaker" and let it rise to the correct gravity, or do I lay it on top and let it sink? Either way better?

Drop it into the test tube with some spin and read at the top of the meniscus once it comes to a stop.

I mark the test jar with a line so that when I fill it and insert the hydrometer just a bit of wort will overflow. Hopefully that takes the foam if any out of the jar.
