I am new to kegging, and picked up a couple of used ball lock cornie kegs recently.

I didnt have any quick disconnects so I ordered some from keg connection.

When they came in last week I wanted to pressureize the kegs with co2 after cleaning them.

I had a hell of a time trying to get the gas QD to seat, and then to remove it. IS their some kind of trick to this?

Thinking back I was just trying to push it straight down with QD sleeve retracted. Do they need to be twisted on or something? Do the QD's or posts need lubricated?

Getting it on was hard enough, but I ended up having to wrap a weightlifting strap around it to pull it off. Surely this cannot be right, and I am wondering if I got either faulty kegs or QD's.

any suggestions?

Are you putting the black disconnects on the "out" side, and the gray disconnects on the "in" side? They aren't the same. Is it possible that the posts were removed, and put on incorrectly, when cleaning the kegs?

+1 to what Yooper said. I have done this a million times.

In addition to swapping the "out" and "in" poppets, I'll add, get some keg lube.

I have keg lube, i will use it.

I will check the posts, I hadnt cleaned and sanitized them yet. So I did not switch the posts, but that doesnt mean they are not switched. I was just opening them and inspecting the dip tubes.

The gas-in posts are usually marked with notches, or at least they are on all my kegs. I have had a hell of a time getting QDs on and off before on the correct posts, but keg lube fixes that problem lickety-split; a small dab on the O-ring is all you need and just twist the QD on the post to get the lube spread around. Comes on and off like cutting butter with a hot knife with lube on the post.

FWIW...I picked up a 2 keg system from KegConnection last week, brought it home and when I was cleaning the kegs and beer lines I ran into the exact same problem on one of the kegs. The gas quick disconnect wasn't going all the way down on one of the gas posts and when I tried to take it off, it was a pain in the ass!!! Everything hooked up perfectly on the other keg. So I disconnected the quick disconnect on the one that worked and tried it on the suspect keg and gas post and it slid on with ease. This eliminated a potential gas post problem and I narrowed it down to a faulty gas quick disconnect. I called KegConnection and talked with the owner about the problem and he said he hasn't seen but a couple faulty disconnects in his many years of business but would be happy to mail out a new gas disconnect to fix the problem. Well, after waiting 5 days for a disconnect to never show up, I ran out to the LHBS and purchased one for six bucks, brought it home, hooked it up, and everything works perfectly!!! So possibly KegConnection got a shipment of faulty disconnects and you and I are the only ones so far that have noticed. I would call them and try to get a new one sent, but there is the possibility the new one will be from the same batch of defects so you might be better off buying a new one from somewhere else. Hope this helps!!!
