PPM vs mg/L

My local water company just sent me some information on the water quality. This years report isn't due out until June but they gave me the normal ranges it stays in.


Calcium (Ca+2) 20-35 mg/L.
Magnesium (Mg+2) 7-20 mg/L.
Sulfates (SO4-2) 60-200 mg/L with an average of about 100.
Sodium (Na+) 10-40 mg/L.
Chloride (Cl-) 15-40 mg/L.
Total Alkalinity 50 to 110 mg/L.

Now I notice reference materials always refer to the water quality as PPM not mg/L. So does anyone know if it works out to be the same, or do I need to somehow convert it?

For all practical purposes, mg/l and ppm are the same thing.

I believe they're the same thing. 1 PPM = 1 mg/L.

No, but for water chemistry the difference is too small to matter.
