I have started using a plate filter recently and the first time it went rather smooth and quickly. However the last three time I filtered my beer during kegging its been a nightmare. I brew 10 gallon batches and the first beer I filtered was 10 gallons and it took just over an hour or so using the course filters at about 6 psi. However the last few times its been about 2 1/2+ hours per 5 gallon keg. Also these leak proof plate filters leak like a sieve even at the recommended 5psi or lower! I can’t figure out why every time I filter another beer it gets harder and longer. I did buy the filter and the first pads from a different store than the replacement pads but they seem to all be the same to me. Anyone else use one of these and have any advice. I tried filtering cold and room temp and nothing seems to help.

You are using new filters every time you filter, right? Do you know the micron ratings of the filters you have are? Sounds like the replacement ones you got could be a finer micron.

It could be that or it could be that there is so much in suspension to filter out, that the filter material is being clogged early.

Have you tried fining the beer before filtering?

I got the kit and the first filter pads from morebeer and the extra filters from austin home brew. They both say 2-7 micron so I assume they are both from the same manufacture. I also put the secondary’s in the fridge for 3 days before filtering to drop out as much as possible. On the last beer it was dry hopped in the secondary so I crashed that for a few days in the fridge then racked them into a keg a crashed them again before filtering and it still didn’t help. I also use irish moss in the boil but nothing afterwards.

I do have a cartridge filter that I use for my water I wonder if buying one of the beer coarse filters for that to use as the first filter and then using the plate for the medium and polish to finish it up.
