greetings ....I am looking to make my first batch of wine soon...looking at kits right now and will probobly jump in sometime soon...anyway, all the kits I looked at say to use an 8 gallon bucket...I found an old plastic bucket that some dry dog food came in question is can I use this for my primary fermenter??....dosent it have to be food grade plastic??...it has the recycle triangle on bottom with a #2 in the center...not sure what that means....and yes I am a rookie lol......thankx.....Tom

Equipment is something you use over and over again so I am of the mind, do it right the first time and get the correct equipment. Then you have it for future batches.

Well thats pretty good advice...and I think Ill take it, I just dident want to pay 12.00 shipping on a 12.00 bucket, and I actually found a supplier not too far from home ....thankx Daze..stay tuned for more rookie questions..as I am going to pull the trigger next week and pick up a Winexpert kit.....thankx...Tom

TO prevent the shipping and still get a food grade bucket try going to your local grocery store or bakery and asking for Icing buckets in the bakery department. I got 2 gallon, 4 gallon and 5 gallon buckets for free by doing this. You can split a recipe into half if needed to get it to fit into a free bucket(s). Or you might look into a local brewing store where gas might be less than shipping and buy it there. I started less than 2 months ago and I have made over 30 gallons of wine and drank about 3 gallons of that, while spending less than $150 including ingredients.

Lowes now sales 5 gallon food grade buckets in the paint department(not a Lowes plug at all) I got two for 5 bucks and lids for like 1.75 each. Currently making Welches wine and it taste good so far. They will have a label on the side that says food grade, these are the white buckets with Lowes in blue.
