When it comes to the talk of DG being chalky, a brewer who will remain nameless insisted that it's as a result of DG's refusal to add a tiny fraction of crystal malt which can allegedly avoid that. I'm not a brewer, just throwing what I've been told out there. Whatever the reason, I totally get what the detractors are getting at. Though my Aevum cans were pretty excellent with a little more than a week on them.

As for Insurrection, I definitely welcome their eventual addition of a koelschip. Their sours and saisons are my favorite things that they produce.

I haven't ever used lol before but LOL at that brewer suggesting that.

Don't sleep on East End's Watermelon Gose in cans. It's the perfect summer beer. Really well done kettle sour base with a light brine and a really insane watermelon/minerality happening.

On a DG-related note, I did not try Galaxy Jam from a can, but the growler I got was one of my favorite hoppy offerings from them to date. For a brewery that is doing "chalky" sub-par NE styles they seem to be doing "ok" for themselves. Following them on Twitter, they always seem to sell out of their cans within hours and had to expand capacity because they couldn't keep beer on tap.

Pretty excited Mr Automatic is back at BG...love that beer! I am probably in the minority, but I am really looking forward to trying their lagers when they get going.

I haven't been there yet, but I heard Yellow Bridge in Delmont is coming around. I heard mixed reviews at first, but since it is not too far from me it sounds like I need to plan a visit.

Wasn't a shot at you Clint (or anyone in particular). I travel a decent bit, and more often than not I find myself amazed at how the variety and quality of the hoppy offerings at home. A place like Roundabout which kind of flies under the radar would be hyped to no end in a lot of major cities. Even though they aren't "Pittsburgh", I always consider Fat Head's local and I feel like they are forgotten anymore...which is a shame.

I almost feel like Roundabout flies under the radar by design. I don't know much about them though so maybe I'm off base on that, but marketing is a big part of getting the hype train rolling and they just don't do any.

I really enjoy Roundabout. They are more in my wheelhouse, I think. And it is definitely crazy how much Fat Head's flies under the radar. I'd kill a man to have access to Head Hunter all the time.

I was just shootin the **** with him at the beerfest a couple weeks ago. One of the true craft OGs and hardest working dudes in the business. Fun guy to party with too.

The first time I met Tony was 13 years ago during Millvale Days (I used to live up the street from Vecenie's). He was doing a DFH tasting & I tried what, I think, was my first pumpkin beer. The next day God flooded Millvale.

Back in the day when I worked downtown and he had just started the "beer schools" at the cultural trust are some of my favorite Tony memories. I was able to get a lot of non beer geeks to a geeky, yet approachable event on a monthly basis. RIP Tony.

I don't remember if I met him first through TRASH or Vecinies, but he's been a staple in the Pittsburgh beer community for at least the 15 years I've been around. He was always informative, helpful, and just enough of a weirdo to make me always wish I knew him better.

I went there today to get some of those bomb ass wings before I leave and to snag some of those bottles. Damn tasty stuff, and glad they don't have lines right now. Wait'll you try the legit sour stuff he's had in barrels for 15 months, it's New Glarus R&D esque.

Headed to LA in mid-August with fam to visit in-laws, and thus will need much beer. Want to solicit advice for good bottle shops...and area breweries too (have been a few times, but it's been four years, so landscape has probably changed).

We miiight get a day trip or two sans kiddos, but mostly looking for suggestions very near (or places on the way in between) these locations: Anaheim (Disney for two days), Oceanside (four days) and than Fallbrook (three days, with some plans for Temecula wineries).

Anyone with firsthand advice is apprech.

Near Anaheim: Mr. K's Liqour Store and Bradleys Fine Wine and Spirits for bottle shops. A great bar close to Disneyland is Haven Gastropub.
