What a ******.

Haha not that friend. He already passed that ish.

A west coast friend who doesn't know any better

Is that the cost? Why is BA less?? Less volume?
Reg - 22oz .86/oz
BA - 16oz .94/oz
stakem only drinks fantome and good vibes anymore
Is Fantome still a crapshoot? Been awhile since I've had any since the last one was band-aids and burnt rubber.

Still a crapshoot in that it's one guy doing everything and likes to experiment. Burnt Rubber and Band Aids batches have been gone for a few years now(unless they happen to still be on some shelves)

I think those batches are gone. stakem could confirm though

I traded BA Grat for some more Great Notion stuff last week.

It's decent for trading I guess. In fact, it may be one of the best.

1. Old school name rep
2. Barrel-aged
3. 16oz so it's weight effective
4. Canned for easy packing
5. Expensive as ****, so if you are going $4$, you don't need many. I feel bad about this so make it up in decent extras though

I had a fantome forest ghost (blonde) the other day and it was excellent. I don't know what the hell he put in there but it was definitely worth the $14 I paid for it. I wish I was able to grab a few more bottles. Their regular saison is one of the best beers I've ever had when it's on point.

I traded some for decent stuff last year but didn't bother this year.

The tire fire bandaid era is over. That was a series of isolated incidents circa 2012 that has been fixed. Technically its still possible to get a bad bottle from that era if you find a dusty that is still sitting on a shelf somewhere but for the most part those are all gone.

Many of Dany's fresh offerings suffer from autolysis. You can taste a very distinct/green nature to the yeast but as it fades with time the house brett character comes alive and usually is stunning. Some of his recent batches of classic saison have been off the charts fantastic.

I don't get any of the autolysis descriptors (soy sauce, "meat", or "broth"), but it does seem to me that every relatively fresh bottle of Fantome I've opened in the past couple years was a waste. It's almost like they are all released 6 months too early. When I open one too young, it feels under-attenuated, and you get the Belgian-y esters and phenols that don't really jive with me.

However, if you wait like 6 months, it's like a switch is flipped. Saison has been on point lately. Other somewhat recent releases I've really enjoyed (after the 6 month mark) are: Tonka, Printemps, Forest Ghost (blonde), Noel, and La Dalmatienne...

Not to mention that B1 De Tous les D'iapes is on of my all time favs.

Autolysis was a poor choice in wording on my part. When you say it the way you did, I totally agree. What I taste in the new/fresh bottlings is just "green" neutral or vegetative yeastiness that I do not like. It seemingly transitions to typical belgian yeast phenolics like clove/banana which again...I dont like in Fantome.

Lets not forget that every once in a while Dany still releases a soupy shampoo bottling that is sick. This has happened with both classic saison and printemps (which end up smelling more like lambic than saison and taste good too if you dont mind having to chew your beer.) Oh... and the carbonation has been all over the place lately too with some bottles gushing or being almost still.

TL;DR - **** it, yea Fantome is still a crap shoot game of roulette (that I play frequently.)

Yeah, I agree with the clove/banana in young Tomes for sure. It takes all my willpower not to open any new ones for a while after I get them, but it's tough.

As for the carbonation, I try my best to keep them in the fridge for a week or so to settle before I open one. Even then...you really never know. I think I still have some Artist Gaelle Boulanger swishing around in my skull as the result of one exploding up my nostrils.

Not trading just a friend who really wants some bc of reason 1.

If anyone can help me out let me know other wise I may take the drive this weekend with the kids and grab him some

Iso: Fantome. Seriously. Where can I find some? Anybody want to bottle share?
I usually grab mine when in Buffalo visiting the in-laws. I was going to mention seeing them at VE in the past, but I personally haven't been there in a while.

shuggy If you only had time to hit one, would it be Butler Brew Works or Reclamation?
Don't know. I haven't been to BBW since they've been fully open. In my limited experience with BBW, they were much further ahead than Reclamation was when they opened in Sept/Oct last year. The two are within walking distance of each other so it shouldn't be that difficult to hit both even with a limited time frame.

Pittsburgh thread talking fantome. How bout that

I've inquired here before due to tha apparent abundance amongst our steel city brethren. Haven't seen it anywhere here or in OH. Haven't ever seen it in NE. Got one bottle at a wook superette in FL once though. Tasty stuff.

KevBot brother rebus

I will be in Buffalo for a wedding the weekend after Labor Day. Willing to mule for you whatever 'tomes are available (I typically see 1-2). Willing to meet up at Voodoo or Brew Gents sometime to get them in your hands. BM me if interested.

12 gates brewing in Buffalo area is new and getting some non-paste online love if you want something new to check out. I haven't been there yet myself.

I enjoyed 42North which is pretty close to the in-laws. I saw that Thin Man is getting Zwanze Day this year as well now that Blue Monk is gone.

Drinking a BA Gratitude right now. I liked last year's better, as I thought the barrel was better integrated, but it's still pretty good.

I would gladly pay $8 per can for this. I got it for free, so hopefully it's not any more than that, right guize?
