Paging OneDropSoup

From everything I've read, the difference is just that Old Ales are generally slightly lower in ABV.
Short answer: old ales are old & barleywines are strong. Two different dimensions for basically the same thing.
Long answer: http://zythophile.co.uk/2010/09/14/so-what-is-the-difference-between-barley-wine-and-old-ale/

EDIT: Kind of like saying that fast cars & vintage cars are two different kinds of cars. This is just my understanding, & I'd be curious to hear ZachBrewGentlemen or brewgentlemen's take.

Saw your Twitter exchange with them about the movie.

Though I want to stay a long day's hike away from the political implications innate to this topic, and in spite of knowing nothing of Abjuration Brewing and their external philosophies: I find it...bizarre that this may serve as a first impression, for many of the drinking masses, to their arrival onto the beer scene.

I won't go there because I might get polio

Great read but that dude was just looking to try to take advantage of someone without actually trading anything worthwhile. He's pretty arrogant too about how much cool beer he has

In less controversial news, Galli announced that they'll be carrying Cascade Brewing.

Super excited

Does that mean we'll have more $30+ wild ales on our shelves in good ole' Pgh?

No way price will be jacked

Welcome addition for sure, I'll probably buy a few. Guessing $39 a bottle here.

This

Only actually had one of their beers, the Blueberry, thought it was pretty good but nothing super outstanding. I do have a bottle of Sang Rouge that I've yet to open though that I bought in Philly.

I bought a few bottles east in reading pa $22-26 . Same price as in OR at the brewery actually

I've seen them in other parts of PA for 26-30 so I suspect it'll be about the same. Still more than I'd care to pay though.

Yeah. I bet pittsburgh will be higher than average

I'm pretty stoked for Cascade. I had a bottle of Vlad at one of the coolest bars I've ever been to (The Pine Box) in Seattle on my honeymoon right before we got on a cruise to Alaska. So they have a soft spot in my heart for sure.

So good. Also going to hit you up for Seattle advice. I'll be going in july. Start preparing

Pertaining to Cascade, I like them. I like to try everything they put out, but usually once is enough. Some of there stuff is worth revisiting from time to time, but there prices dont really match up with the product. Blueberry is one of their better offerings IMO. There are a number of others. I remember when it was a big deal to land a Burbonic, now I dont really care that much for that beer. Had a Vine a couple weeks ago, 2011 I believe, was actually one of the least sour of there beers I can remember.

The best cascade I ever had (and top 5 beer for me) was Melon Melange and I don't know why they don't bottle it.

Pinebox is a really cool spot. I went there when I was in Seattle last yet.

As for Cascade, my wife and I were excited to see that. I really enjoy some of their beers (looking at you Apricot) and I am ok with $25 or so for a quality AWA that is readily available. These were the original lacto-bombs before De Garde took it to the next (and IMHO non-enjoyable) level. Draai Laag just doesn't cut it for me and I think AWAs are what is sorely missing in this market.

Not that I think that price point is good, but if it prevents me from shipping out a good beer and paying at least $20 in shipping fees then it winds up being a bargain.

Agreed. What else is cool in Seattle. Prepare a list :)

Multi-quote badge achieved.

The Original Starbucks :D

Didn't they call it an OLD ALE?

TBH, I don't have the slightest idea what the difference is.

I don't think there is a difference
The difference is if you call it an old ale and it's any good at all people say it's really good for an old ale. If you call it a barley wine and it's not spectacular people dump on it. Pretty smart marketing on BG.

#humblebrag this is good

Bummer that I missed on Foshomo. It's all the kids fault. Had to change his diaper before we went to get in line and bam, missed the bottles by like 4-5 people in front of me in line.

No promises yet, but trying to get you a bottle. Stay tuned.

You can multi quote like a world champ!!! I can't keep up with the posts enough this week to even comment on one.

Pretty convinced that me drinking BG hops during the Pens games is very good juju. Started with a 750 of Foshomo for game 5, then poured Kuhnhenn, and 10 seconds after walking back into the room, Bolts scored and it was all down hill. Two 750s of Foshomo tonight? 5-2 win. Looks like I'm picking up some 'Tross tomorrow... Tho maybe brewgentlemen has a couple bottles of Fosho in the secret stash? Trust me... It's in the city's best interest.

I think hunterpgh was referring to an altogether different feat of internet valor. Eeeyeew boy. Not that another ISO: MBP scrum is news, but that beauty from yesterday hasn't even been mentioned here.

My favorite part was the guy that drain poured MBP. If I remember correctly he also made prior claims to Grist house being the best brewery in the city.. So i guess that makes sense after all. o_O
