I'm not sure what RateBeer's rating algorithm is but it's probably something like: (averageRating * totalRatings * 0) + 99

It's not a rating, it's a percentile. The reason numbers seem to be inflated is because RB has such a larger database compared to other sites so if there are 200,000 beers in the database, the top 2,000 beers will be in the 100th percentile.

Plus their forum interface makes my eyes bleed. Their web designer needs to be punched in the head for that clusterfuck.

I'm not the biggest fan of their most recent updates, but to me the reason I started with that site instead of BA way back in the day was because I can't stand the design on BA. I think the black background is terrible, and having around 40 responses per page on a forum page is insane. I prefer a clean database more than anything and RB is light years beyond all the others in that aspect.

Agreed

I also don't understand how a beer can be a 90+ but only 60 for style? I can see the other way around but

Easily. Assume there are only 100 beers and only 10 DIPAs, but those DIPAs are the 10 best beers. Now look at 4th ranked DIPA, it is a top 90 beer, but only better than 6 out of 10 DIPAs

I've recommended it to everyone I know outside of forums and figure I'll do it here as well:

Smallman Galley in the Strip is really good for beer. Got to try G-Funk Friday and most of the PCBW Collabs on Friday night. Also, 1/2 off drafts (and cocktails, I believe) from 4-6 during the week. Tough to beat local drafts for 3-4 bucks. Have never seen Voodoo stuff there, though.

I went to Smallman Galley (1st time there, ******* awesome. Ate 4 full dinner plates from each spot.) on Saturday and drank a few G-Funk Fridays as well. I need more of that IPA in and around my mouth.

So you'd rather the standard 10 posts per page and have to change pages all the time? Pretty sure you're alone on that one.

How is their database larger than BA or Untappd?

Edit: Sorry, not trying to troll. Just wondering how their database, even if it is larger, makes any difference. Now if you say that their algorithm is more complex than other sites I would probably buy that. I'm pretty confident that RateBeer has a smaller user base than BA and Untappd which should equate to a smaller database in the context of storing users rating beers.

The @PGH_BeerWeek fairy brought us more @GooseIsland BCBS. First come, first serve. One per customer.

Anyone know the price on those? I can leave work a little early, hopefully there's still one left around 4:00

**** your math and logic

But yeah. I guess I just didn't think of it like that. Just hard seeing a 90+ rated beer only being 60 in the style....

I have to jump on a call in a few minutes but if it doesn't take too long I'll run back over and grab one. Happy to split it up with you guys since I only want a couple bottles. I'll update when I can

where is kbuzz when you need him

I can stop when I leave here if you guys want me to. Probably around 4 today? I don't want any, so as long as one person can pay me the whole amount back, I'm happy to give it a shot...just don't want to have to organize drops and loot collection for like 4-5 different people.
