Several reasons.

1. Some people prefer drinking at home rather than a bar, especially on weekdays.

2. A 4-pack is the same volume of liquid as a growler with the added flexibility of being able to consume it over a longer time span. This goes further when you consider DG did two different beers each week, allowing those to go further than two growlers would.

3. How much is a growler at DG, I believe $16? For nearly the same price, you have the benefits of a can. It may cost more to the brewery, but those costs obviously aren't getting passed onto the consumers, and there are other benefits to the brewery by canning (not tying up staff with filling growlers, pushing more volume of beer - as stated above, I doubt DG sold an equivalent amount of beer in growlers than they did in cans)

4. It's a lot easier to give a buddy a can of beer to try than divy up a growler. Also a lot easier to ship.

Edit: Doesn't apply now, but in warmer months, cans are the best vessel for drinking on the beach/lake/boat/hiking

Not very hard to think of why someone would prefer a can.

TL;DR

The biggest problem with growlers is the lack of consistency in filling. Ive gotten a couple recently with a lot of headspace which means the shelf life is going to suffer. If everyone filled them with the care of brew gentleman or dg, life would be better. Whole foods South hills does a particularly poor job with fills. I always feel like a d*ck asking them to top it off. It's not because I want the extra ounce, it's to preserve shelf life. I'd take cans over growlers every day of the week but agree it's tough to justify waiting in line when a growler is an option. I much prefer the 16 oz format even to a 32 oz growler. I rarely want to drink two of the same beers in a row.

Last year yes because there was a bottle share, without that I wouldnt expect as many to line up.

Maybe this was always EE policy and they just never enforced it?
  • CAN I BRING MY OWN BEERS TO SHARE? Sorry, no. Now that we’re a pub, we can only allow consumption of East End beer on site; please do not bring in your own beer to drink. We need to be “in charge of your sobriety” while you’re on our licensed premises.

Unfortunately no. Due to our newer designation as a Brewpub, we can only allow you to drink what we're selling that day. But don't worry, we have plenty of interesting and rare stuff to keep you busy. Thanks for asking!

Edit: I couldn't get the whole EE Facebook post when asked about bottleshare

Has anyone had any older vintages of Gratitude recently? I have a 2007 I was looking to crack sometime soon. I figure that ten years seems like a good time to open this.

No, it was nice to get it fresh in the summer. We'll never see it fresh again.
I know of a case of April 2011 Sunshine still sitting on a shelf in this fair city. Think of any beer that went from seasonal to full time & think how you used to drink it now stroll right past it. Lagunitas Sucks ring a bell for anyone?

Man, this is so true. I just un-liked Greg's post. Need to see if Gene can delete my comment.

Edit: What comment?

Christ on a Christmas card yunz are all so beat and defeated it's depressing the **** out of me.

If we all commit to drinking 7-9 cases of Sunshine a week we won't have any problem with freshness. Trust.

Ain't even like that horse meat they serve is cheap either.

I don't care if it's the horses butt meat, 2 beef n cheddars and a side of curlys is a tremendous and delectable meal.

honestly i'm a big arby's fan. and hardee's.
You gotta give Hardee's a little credit, as they're openly embracing that their food is going to induce a coronary & seem to be doubling down on it. It's like they held focus groups on how to best create an edible assisted suicide.

EDIT: And this is from someone who's gone on record for occasionally indulging in those ******-up mutant subs from GetGo.
