6 & Save. $16. In 2008.

The first time I went to House I was driving to Penn State and made a pit stop. This was probably 2009 or 2010. I noticed a few varieties of Cantillon on the shelves (at least the classic and Rose), but passed because they were pricy and I was already buying a lot of stuff. Said to myself I'll grab them the next time.

That was the last time I saw Cantillon in Pittsburgh.

BTW - tried 4 more varieties of Tree House. Another Julius, Sap, Haze, and Alter Ego. Haze would probably be the only one I would actively seek out to try again.

Working through a lot of Trillium bottles now and every one I've had so far has been better than Tree House and by a pretty wide margin.

Ho1KB has never carried white market Cantillon. 6 & Save did, & the most expensive was $18/750 (the Lou Pepes).

Shrug. It was on the shelves that used to be on the right after you walked in. Beside the cash register. White market or not, it was there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I feel like these are two ends of the spectrum. Tilquin is very smooth & well-blended, Girardin is funky & earthy as hell (at least as far as my 8-year-old memory serves me).

You had a very refined palate for an 8-year-old.

Tilquin is awesome, the Plum version is also excellent. It has been so long since I've had Girardin Black or White Label that I don't think I can comment on it, but I do remember thinking Black Label was amazing at the time. This was definitely back in pre-2009 as well.

The before time, when Cantillon just sat on shelves. And 18 dollars was expensive for a 750 of any beer.

The last gueuze excluding Cuvee Rene that I bought off a shelf or out of a cooler was 3F Golden Blend and Cantillon Cuvee des Champions at Pizza Paradiso in DC. 3F Scharbeekse Kriek around the same time at House about 4 years ago.

The most recent I bought was FouFoune and Mamouche at Vintage Estates and even that was 3 years ago I think. Did not care for Mamouche. FouFoune was good, but not up to the caliber of St. Lamvinus for me.

Stuff like 3F Framboos is of course great, but I've always found myself more drawn to the basic unaltered gueuze or even straight lambic like Iris or Doesjel (which I think is technically an uncarbed gueuze) more than the fruited stuff.

****, now that I've written them all down I've had a lot of different lambic/gueuze. Name dropping.

If I had to pick a flat out favorite, I'd go with Drie Fonteinen Oude Gueuze.

I just got to try the black label in 375 format from Ohio and liked it so much I ordered the bulk pack from biab

I just ordered some doesjel, excited to try it

you should make a gueuze

They should and they should call it Tommy Gueuze

Saw this yesterday in Chicago. Seriously blew my mind. I should've asked the shop owner what he thought.

That bulk pack is such a good deal

You know it's supposed to be sour, right?

Also Penn has had changing of the guard with brewing. Their beers are really hitting right now, Kaiser4lyfe.

I was not aware of that, as it was listed as an IPA and the manager of the bar told me that it was infected. There must be some sort of miscommunication as to what style of beer it is

Sucks they don't sell it to the us anymore I don't think (Girardin that is) I bought it too before the price went up. Great deal should have bought more
I saw 375's at sabatinis 2 months ago. They were $14 though, which is a far cry from the $6 is costs to get them from biab.

From Penn's site: Rods & Cones is our hopped-up sour ale, inspired by Flanders red ales. Simcoe, Amarillo, and Mosaic hops give this beer a huge hop flavor and aroma.

Fair enough, but I usually trust a style when I read it on a menu board. Didn't know that I have to look up every beer that i drink. Haha

Wasn't implying that, just offering a little more info on the beer. I would've presumed the same if it was billed as an IPA. It's the bar staff's job to be in-the-know on what they're serving. Where was this?

EDIT: Love that they just leapt to "It's infected", too. Gah.

D's........

They tasted it and said "we need to talk to our distributor about this its infected." I agreed that it tasted really, really infected for an ipa. They might have gotten the style from the distributor, who knows.

Edit: What is funny is that I ordered one to split with jeevo without telling him what it was. It was a "whoops I guess I ordered us something awful"

tommyguz 's wife took the cupcakes to a whole new level today at voodoo for my baby #2 diaper party.

Yeah, not knowing what the style of beer was since it was basically a blind tasting, I thought that it was pretty decent, thinking it was a sour brown ale or something of that sort. When you told me it was supposed to be an IPA I almost gagged. Funny that the bartender didn't know what it was supposed to be either and erroneously labeled it on the chalkboard.

I'm not seeing this beer on their draft list.

**** Monday (the actual day of the week, not the beer).

I agree. I need a beer.

If anyone was thinking about giving that new Rivertown/Millersburg collab OH-PA a shot, don't. I also tried a shot of East End's new Citra Pale Ale at GE yesterday. I **** you not, it tasted like a corn beer. Was impressively bad.

I've been seeing Rivertown cans everywhere lately but have been waiting for someone to tell me that any of their beers where worth trying again.

I figured I'd give it a shot. It was pretty mediocre. Not bad but very forgettable. Not particularly hoppy and pretty thin, even for a 4.8% beer. I do like Jah Mon though for what it is.
