phing, I now have that Urquel pic as my desktop background, lol. Jealous.
You should make a trip. I moved to Budweis last October. Being less than 2 hours from Prague and Plzen has been a ton of fun and there is so much great and cheap beer. Still need to do the brewery tour at the Budvar brewery here, but pilsner Urquell was definitely a lot of fun and a well done tour.

I ain’t never had a suitably crafted lager that couldn't hold a billowy head. Alas, this is not a suitably crafted lager. And I tried hard to build a head on this one.

If you are looking for a rustic pils in the sense that the grains taste raw—almost rubbery, which is odd—or need an under attenuated sugar kick, this is your jawn. Otherwise, save your septic system and walk on by.

Wait, you moved abroad? Awesome man!

The tour at Budvar is fantastic. Chodovar is also cool, they have a beer spa and a restaurant (beer pairing dinner).

Yeah - 2-3 year job that I couldn't turn down. My better half is still back in the US so I'm back there for 3-4 months of the year and she has two extended work trips over here this year too. Works out surprisingly well.

This is great to hear. I definitely need to make the time for it soon. I love the times when I'm walking back from work and the wind in blowing south, the whole town smells like spent grain or hops. I'll have to make the trip to Chodovar too while I'm here, trying to explore as much as I can while I have the opportunity.

The smell is amazing, when our bus started pulling into Plzen we were instantly hit by it. Here are some pics that a friend took during our tours.

Walked in completely blind. Knew Triple Crossing for their IPAs, but lagers? Had three on tap, one of which was an excellent Italian pils. All killer. Very impressed. Pathway Pils was not on, but I walked with a case anyway. Other three that impressive. Glad I did. Easily pils of the year for me midway through the year. Nice minerality, soft, fluffy body, crisp bitterness with enough floral notes to keep it interesting, and balanced, fresh baked bread malt backbone. Crazy good.

They are killing the lager game right now. Kolsch(yes I know), helles, festbier, and several Pilsners have been great. I find they could all use a little more carb, but everything else is on point.

Maybe cuz I’m accustomed to explaining away flat lambic like I’m Tomme Arthur, but I guess I don’t even pay attention to carb levels anymore.

So just cracked another. Science and all.

You are right: it is pretty low carbed. Good call!

F*ck if it aint still crushable and extremely tasty nevertheless. Already half way done with the glass I just cracked to ruminate on carb levels. And still holding a nice head in spite.

And agreed on the kolsch. Also killer.
