Another excellent PNW Pils.

Did a double blind Highland Park Brewery pilsner taste test. Included was Fill Pils (german), Pleasant Pils (Italian, whatever that means), and Goodie Barrel (barrel fermented version of Goodie Pils colab with Creature Comforts). Excluded Timbo and Goodie Pils because their level of hops sort of turn them into something that isn't a pilsner (do we have a name for this yet? american pils?). I think the #1 thing I took away from this was how much all 3 beers changed over the hour+ it took us to drink the 3 crowlers. Kept the crowlers in the fridge, so things stayed cold, but the O2 must have really changed some of the flavors.

Anyway, tasting notes below:

A) Aged hops nose (almost reminiscent of Iris), lingering bitterness, herbal up front, overripe honeydew finish, little bit of tar flavor later on.
B) Cantelope nose, mango flavor initially, a ton of dried apricots later on.
C) The least nose on this beer, a bit herbal initially, less and less flavor as the beer sat out.

Our ranking was B then C then A.

I was able to guess the beers correctly. A was Goodie Barrel, B was Pleasant Pils, and C was Fill Pils. All were good, although Pleasant and Fill had a clear leg up. Fill was closest to generic "beer" in terms of having less discernible flavor (but to its credit, no off flavors). I could crush Pleasant by the liter. I assume this is what HPB is taking to Pils and Love. Goodie Barrel was the least traditional and in retrospect maybe didn't fit in with the more classic execution of the other two for this blind taste test. Maybe HPB will make a Czech Pils one day. Until then, please give me unlimted Pleasant Pils in 12 oz six packs.

Be still, my heart.

I have spoken to Bob in the past about making a Kvasnicový (yeast beer), so I know he at least knows about the technique. He sounded intrigued. I would imagine that now, with the extra tank space and different brewing facilities, and with an obvious step up in commitment to/frequency of lager brewing (so, less concern about lack of yeast availability), a true Kvasnicový could be possible (right after the Czech Pils, perhaps). One can dream....

I spoke to bob on Friday and he said that fill pils cans WILL happen at some point. That will be a case minimum purchase.

Have been enjoying a bunch of pilsners this summer. A couple highlights:

Awesome to have this available in cans now. Oxbow Luppolo...“Italian-style”

Also a local brewery Silvaticus makes a damn good one called Sovereign Pils. I’ve been grabbing multiple crowlers of this and don’t plan to stop anytime soon.

FoudreGuy any recent NW pils I should keep an eye out for that might have slipped under my radar? will def be looking for matchless brewer's special and some of these Mirage cans.

Crosspost from brewing thread:

I've been hearing about Italian pilsners lately but can't find much info. What makes a pilsner Italian? I've never had Luppolo or Tipopils so I have no idea what they taste like but I'm intrigued.

I am not sure this is really that helpful, but from Highland Park Brewery:

Ciao! Meet our new Italian Pilsner, Pleasant Pils! What is an Italian pils you ask? Well it uses traditional European ingredients, is assertively dry hopped (for a Pilsner), & has a nice dry finish.

Nothing that I can think of. Those Mirage cans are probably gonna be tough to find but you never know.

Had a Nebraska Pils by Nebraska Brewing last night while visiting tiny wife’s family. Good stuff.

EDIT EDIT BIG EDIT: Urban Family has a Taproom only pilsner that is absolutely fantastic.

Never been to Urban Family, but that sounds like a great reason to visit.

Edit: can I bring food to UF? I'm trying to eat some Sunny Teriyaki with my pilsner while I'm in that part of town.

Outside food is always welcome at UF. No fills on the Pilsner so drink up while you’re there. It is ridiculously smooth.

Good news - new Mirage cans out this weekend, including a 4% Helles:

*SLUG-PROOF, 4.0% ABV, is an 8-week Helles lager brewed with experimental hop varieties: X04190 and WSU11059-059. Available in 4pks of 16oz cans for $16 or $96/case.

When I picked up some Jonron bottles a few weeks back Michael poured me some of the Slugproof from the tank and it hit the spot. 4% helles should be perfect for this weather. The price is... ambitious, but then it has been in tank since May.

Is this a distro thing or a go to production facility thing?

This finally showed up on shelves around here. Was super psyched to try it, and thought I went into it with reasonable expectations.

Turns out my expectations of a simple, quaffable, clean, inexpensive pils were too high. Cloying malt bill with low apparant attenuation and nothing in the way of cereal/grain/biscuit notes. Moderate level of bittering hops but no discernible late additions to speak of. And the yeast seems to be throwing off tons of esters—wtf?

Bummed. At least Southern Gothic hit local shelves around the same time to counterbalance this miss.

Noooo we haven't gotten it here but I have high hopes for it. Oh well, I'm still going to try it.

Sovereign is easily my favorite MA brewed pils. Thats also my favorite glass at the moment. They make some insanely good beers. They name Notch as an influence and it shows in the best ways.

Looks like I need to get back to MA and try these. Wasn't open when I was living there as far as I know.

My Dad is in a beer of the month club and he always gives me one or two bottles/cans that he gets. This one was a pretty decent pils while grilling.

Gonna grab a single can of the Helles today at Chucks.
