Hi everyone, one of my friend just asked me a weird question and I don't know what to answer. How can I determine the phosphorus level on my beer without going to a laboratory. Can I get an estimate based on the ingredients?

Cheers!

Limiting phosphorus is usually recommended for kidney disease, so if that is why he's asking, I wouldn't want to guess.

Phosphorus levels vary based on the water source. It's also in grain - so the more grain, the higher the levels. Many brewers use phosphoric acid to bring down mash ph, so that would increase it as well.

Yeah, he's undergoing dialysis and wants to drink my beer but he's asking if it's low on Phosphorus so he can try. But yeah, I guess I wouldn't suggest it.

I was of the understanding that Kidney disease and alcohol are not a good combination and that the latter might cause of the former.

I would suggest that he only gives your beer a taste test.
