Hi,

Sometimes I need to brew with hop pellets. However I currently whirlpool the trub to the middle and siphon off the wort with a racking cane, which filters leafs well, but won't filter pellets.

Because I would have to develop some other system to filter pellets (related posts exist on this) I'm wondering if I couldn't just siphon it all out into the fermenter and not worry about filtering the hop pellets? I know the small pieces will just settle out, but will they hurt the beer?

My theory is that it will marginally affect it - but has anyone tried?

***Please don't propose filter options because I asked that in another post - I realize that will solve this, but I'm just curious if it even needs solving! Thanks,
 
no they dont hurt the beer. And atl;east for me, if i whirlpool and wait 10 minutes, i get a nice hop pellet cone also in the center. If your really worried you can whirlpool, drain, settle in carboy and then syphon again and pitch yeast but i never found that worth it due to contamination risk.

2 questions. Are you waiting a full 10 minutes with the whirlpool and are you stirring STRONGLY?
 
I always use pellets when I brew. Sometimes I use a hop bag....sometimes I just dump 'em in the boiling wort. I try to whirlpool, but alot gets in the primary. No off flavors, no floaties, and no problems...... It'll just settle out with the trub.... Won't hurt a thing....
 
I have found by draining all the contents of the boiler (after chilling) into the fermenter'(s) more hop flavor get's into the beer and there is no downside at all. Do not concern yourself with trub. Ferment 2 weeks or more (At the lower range of the yeast's recommended temperature range) and bottle or keg.
 
I know you aren't asking for filtering options, but I just recently built a hop stopper and started whirlpooling AND leaving it for 10 min or so. The wort from my last batch came out crystal clear w/ barely any trub at all. I used to just drain off everything w/ no consequences in the end product, but there's definitely something nice about having really clear wort going into the primary.

I use pellets exclusively, and about 1/2 the time I just dump everything into the primary. Makes for a multi-colored trub, but no problems.

as for the other 1/2 of the time, may I interest you in a 5 gallon paint strainer.....
 
My first brew (partial boil) I dumped everything into my fermenting bucket including hop pellets. I then topped it up to five gallons. The problem I had was that I only ended up with four gallons of beer because there was so much trub at the end of fermentation.
