My LHBS is full of great advice. The owner runs my brew club. I wish everyone had this kind of local support.
I used to work at a LHBS. I never told anyone they needed to buy something just to make a sale. I would ask them questions about how they make beer, and suggest something that fits their way of brewing. Sure, my opinion persuaded the suggestion, but in the end, the customer would make up their own mind, since I’d give them all the options. The LHBS is the last place on earth I'd go to get brewing advice. They're in the business of selling stuff. The answers they give a customer are likely geared toward selling something. That's business. The store that was near me was notorious for that and a couple of the clerks routinely gave very bad advice. A how-to question would get a response like, "here, buy this" as an answer.
You don't go into a Best Buy and ask the 19-year-old clerk "what kind of entertainment center should I buy?"
Don't get me wrong, it was a great little LHBS, and I miss it a lot. But it was a place to buy supplies, not learn about brewing or have a problem solved. You did your homework in advance then went in to stock up. HBT is a place to do that homework.
If everybody had that kind of local support then we wouldn't be coming here. And you would miss us.My LHBS is full of great advice. The owner runs my brew club. I wish everyone had this kind of local support.
