Apologies in advance -- maybe this would fit better in another forum.

I'm getting close to the last stages of building my new Brutus 10 all-electric HERMS system with a 3-pid control panel. For building my panel, I bought the really cool Irwin self-adjusting wire stripper and a Titan ratcheting crimper. They've made things SO much easier. Yet how much sense is it to have a tool that I might use maybe once or twice, if ever again, in the next 20+ years? I can see using the wire stripper some here and there maybe, but I don't know that I'll have a need for the ratcheting crimper ever again.

I'm wondering if there might be interest (or maybe it's already in the forum) in a borrowing and/or co-op forum. As an example, I need punches for my kettles and would love to not have to buy them at whole or reasonably discounted price--I'll likely never use them again and they would either collect dust or I'd have to try to resell them. It'd be great to put that $100 or whatever into a pH meter, for example. Seems like there would be many other people here who would love to borrow something for a project and either return it to the owner or pass it along to the next person needing it. I know I would.

Maybe someone could buy a new tool and pass it down the line with a small return from subsequent borrowers who would help pay it off over time. Like, the $26 crimpers I bought--maybe I could pass those along and each time someone borrowed them, they sent me $2 (or more, depending on original cost), until the original cost--minus my equal $2 investment--was paid off. That would allow 13 people to use them for $2. From there, it could be put into the borrowing "pool". Maybe the borrower or co-oper would pay for shipping?

This could save people a good amount of money that they can instead put directly into their systems, projects, brews, whatever. And for someone who took the initial hit in buying something s/he might not ever use again, s/he could be paid back over time (if s/he wanted to) and help others spend their hard-earned money on actually making beer.

I know there's a pay it forward thread and a trade forum, but I feel like this is different?

Eager to hear what others think or if I'm just missing a forum/thread along these lines that I'm just not seeing.

Thanks!

If you're punching stainless, the punches get destroyed after maybe 8-9 times. You can only rethread them so much before they're shot...

Neat concept for other stuff though!

Harbor freight has a 4 punch set for $25.

Sure they are junk but I've done 6 or 7 holes with mine and they are still going fine.

Found these on the AHA website in your area:

James River Homebrewers

A homebrew club would be a great place to share not only tools, but brews.

Great idea, Q. Will do that. Also think that this forum could widen the scope of sharing availability.

Thanks!

Can we get details on the HF kit? I've only been able to find conduit punches which aren'tthe right sizes.

Right, those are conduit. The 1 1/4 inch punch doesn't make a 1 1/4 inch hole.

"Includes punches and dies for 1/2 in. , 3/4 in. , 1 in. and 1-1/4 in. pipe and conduit"

Which punches in the kit did you use for the element hole and which for the bulkhead hole etc...?

The actual hole sizes are (per http://www.currenttools.com/holemaking/27-knockout-punches-actual-hole-size-chart.html):

1/2" .885
3/4" 1.115
1" 1.362
1 1/4" 1.701

Maybe sell it for $2 less to the next person, and then they sell it for $2 less, etc. That way you don't have to wait forever, but still get your $2 in towards the tool. Kinda like how amortization works.

I used the 1"HF Punch I believe for the element holes on a keggle and a kettle. It's been a bit since I did it. Not great but they work.

I spent the cash for the Greenlee radio punch for all the bulkhead holes. It was pretty worn after the 8 holes I used it for as well.

If someone wanted to pay shipping I would send them my HF punch set. I'll never use it again... My HERMS System hopefully will continue serve me well for years to come...

Some people will read this and go 'Yay - free stuff!'. :D

If you don't mind taking a risk that you'd never get paid or get your stuff back, then I think it's a great idea. The big problem is shipping will kill any money you might save. I'd do this if I had some stuff I didn't need, and someone else was willing to pay the shipping.

There was a pass it along thread a while back that was going pretty well until some people started getting greedy and posting long lists of expensive stuff that they wanted like kegs, chillers, boil pots, coolers, etc... It kind of lost it's primary purpose, which was to pass along stuff you no longer needed.
