One day last month I was thinking I need to fill another fermentor just to have another beer in the pipeline....

I have have a new years resolution to buy no beer for home consumption. I'm an AG brewer and I typically brew after work. Weekends don't work for me when it comes to brewing. I have two residences one for work one for home. All my gear is it at the work location. I reserve weekends for family time.

Anyhow. I wanted to make another fast staple beer. Full boil extract. I was thinking of another simple amber like my house amber. (see side pull-down) I like German Noble hops and the hybrid variety. The LHBS had a bunch of liberty. Its like hallertauer.

I assumed 4lbs amber extract, 1lb 20L, then 4 additions of Liberty @ 60, 30, 5 , 1.... A red beer with liberty, "Patriot Ale" for lack a better name.

Patriot Ale ver 1

I go to the LHBS to pick-up supplies they are out of 20L and Liberty!!

OK - Change of plans ...

I pick out 40L. I see Victory Malt... and think huh... purely on name alone. It could use a touch of that. I have used it before, but along time ago, was thinking biscuity taste. I'm like OK, grab that knowing I gonna need something else. (money is burning a hole in my pocket) I see the aromatic malt grab that and 2 oz of Mt Hood and bail.

The recipe changed to a mini PM with 4lbs amber extract, a 1Lb mix of 40L, Victory, Aromatic & Pale Malts and then 4 additions of Mt Hood, 60, 30, 5 , 1.... A red beer with Victory but no liberty, Patriot Ale ver 2 for lack a better name. Or should be Patriot Act Ale.

Thoughts or opinions welcome. I'm thinking the 40/victory/aromatic will be a big improvement.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing.

I think the aromatic is like Munich. I know Munich is classified as a base malt.

I also have amalyse enzyme in powered form that I can add.

After checking you're right. I'm going to add a pound of pale malt.

Maybe even 6-row...I've never felt the need to use it, but it is supposed to have a higher enzyme content.

Otherwise it sounds good. I am not the best with recipes though, still working on that.

Good luck with your brew!

If aromatic has the same ability as Munich it would probably not do much to the victory malt without the extra enzyme of pale malt.

Thanks.

I have used 6 row on my beers with a good portion of adjuncts. My Miller Light recipe calls for it...

Made the 2nd version. Went well. It kind of defeated the purpose. The PM/Mini-mash wasn't much of a time saver.

I'm sure I'll appreciate it later...

Question - Are any of you able to open the Malt.io links and see the recipe?

For me it signs in automatically. Wasn't sure you could see them.

Thanks....

My god.... This beer has turned out awesome. Very balanced with malt aroma and taste, good hop bitterness/flavor and some late fruit twist and a clean finish.

Serving Vessel: Vintage Firestone Tire Goblet.

Visual, nice redish color. Nice white head.

Aroma, nice malt smell, fruit like raisin or prune, or some dried fruit.

Taste, balanced, first impression is, after the malt smell is the hop bitterness. Then I get a malty raisin like taste. Which I like in this beer.

Mouthfeel, carbed at 8 psi, not too much tingle from gas, swishing it around I detect more malt with a raisin finish.

Aftertaste, hop and malt fading with dry fruit. Of course either raisin or dried prune.

I never used Briess Aromatic Malt.. I'm impressed. I know i used raisin alot in the description, not sure where it came from 40L doesn't seem to be raisiny nor is victory. Must be the aromatic malt. Nevertheless a good easy drinker.

Recipe; Patriot Ale 2
