I am looking for different kinds of beers to make and while I usually drink commercial beers like Samuel Adams Boston Lager, Killian's Irish Red and Pete's Wicked Ale a friend suggested that I might like India Pale Ale. Now I have had Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and I didn't care for it very much so I am wondering if that tastes anything like India Pale Ale?

I've not had the beer - but Bob Klein rates it 3.2 / 5, "Musty, smoky, some bitter back of the mouth taste and aftertaste... barley malt aroma is present... subdued fruitiness... hops are prominent..."

This sounds like a reasonably typical pale ale. I prefer "fresh" to smoky in this line of beer. But they are not for everyone. India Pale is usually an very hoppy version, sometimes with woody overtones.... also not for everyone.

Given the beers you like, why don't you brew a red ale?

If you didn't like the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, then you probably won't care for an IPA, IMHO. But don't take my word for it...bum one from one of your buddies to try. I will say that Sierra Nevada is much better on tap than in bottles tho.

Thanks for the info. Yep, I think a Red Ale would be more to my liking.

SNPA is heavy with cascade hops. You may be one of the people, like me, who don't care for cascades.
If you can get ahold of a british pale ale give it a try. I love goldings hops. They are a lot! different from cascades.
