I have a igloo mash ton with no false bottom. I went ahead and purchased a 5 gallon paint strainer bag to use for my first all grain. How do I use that in igloo? Do i put in grain and tie it? If I do that do I stir it still and sparge the same? I don't want to screw it up.

5Gallon igloo? The bag should stretch over the top with not much prob I think. Try to leave it open, but if you must tie it, tie it loose and the grains should float some rather than all bunch up in a ball.

You will probably have to figure out a way to hold it open so you can stir the grain. You will have to be sure you break up any dough balls.

A paint strainer bag fits a 5 gallon bucket. A 20 qt stock pot is about the same size. It limits the amount of brew you can do in a full boil to about 3 gallons.

You could formulate a recipe that makes a strong wort and adds top up water to get your desired amount.

This has not been my experience, but I generally don't do really big beers. I think a PS bag is a decent starter bag to see if you like the method.

If you are doing full boils how much can you get.

I mash the recipe and end up with a little under 5 gallons preboil. If you then do a 1 hour boil, I end up with about 3 gallons.

Ya mine is not big enough. I'll try it today without a bag. The mash does have a steel braid

In my 8G kettle it is a real stretch to get the PS bag snapped around the 13.5 inch rim, but it will get there with coaxing and swearing. I can then do as much as 7G water and 10# grain.

I had some larger grain bags from MoreBeer ( http://www.morebeer.com/products/bag-24-mesh-grain.html ) that I would tend to use with that kettle and use the PS bags in my 5G starter kettle .. so yes, with the PS bag and 5G kettle I was more likely to do 3 gallon batches.

Now I have a Wilser bag so the others are 'back ups'
